Farthest shot you have ever made and killed a deer - 08/12/22 12:06 AM

Me personally I’ve never had to shoot past 200 yards, never even been in a place where I could shoot further than 200 yards. I’m curious to here about some of you snipers on here.

373 ranged and 350 ranged. Never shot at anything farther. I’ve killed several from 300-330 but I’ll be the first to tell you, although I’ve done it, that’s no chip shot. Gotta have a good rest, calm nerves and know your distance.

366 yards, missed him 4 times starting at about 225, pure luck on the last shot but I’ve killed 4 between 300-330 outta the same stand on a power line that dropped in there tracks. Shot a coyote last year at 335 yards

Mine is 415. My son at 16 got one at 465.
We have a powerline that you can shoot as far as you want to on it. I have my 7mag dialled in for that specific spot. I don't hunt with it anywhere else on the property. Shooting house with solid rest out the window and bipod shooting sticks for the rear area of the stock.

Only about 130 yards for me but spotted a buddy who shot one at 565 yards with a Weatherby 338-378 I believe. Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it, but he practices at 600 a lot too.

425 and 375 with a Remington 742 and a $100 scope. One dropped like a sack of taters, had to shoot one twice. Normal shot in my shooting house is about 200yds. I like to stay back so i dont get busted.

Re: Farthest shot you have ever made and killed a deer - 08/12/22 03:22 AM

Not the farthest but the one I’m most proud of. 305yds ranged at the far end of a clear cut. Coyote popped up and ran a bunch of deer off. I held over about 2’ with a 30-06. Dropped it like a sack of potatoes and hit him right at the base of his neck with him facing me. My old avatar was a b&w picture of him where he dropped.

I've killed a couple 250-270....I did miss up and shoot at one 2 years ago that was a lot farther than I thought and hit it, was around 400 yards facing me I clipped its shoulder aiming at his nose....won't do that again but he did live according to cam pics...my most impressive kills are coyotes, working on farmland gives me opportunities to fire off rounds and hope for the best n I've killed several over 250

I've killed two at 420-425 yards. At least half a duzen more between 300-350.

For the first 25 years I hunted i only killed two deer over 100 yards, one at 150 the other at around 180 yards. Almost all of the deer I killed were 50 yards or less. Only been in the last 10 years that I've had the opportunity to shoot deer at longer distance.

500 yards on a doe bedded on a hillside. Used the hood of my buddy's old IH scout for a rest. Gun was an old Enfield 30-06 my dad had converted to a sporter topped with a Bushnell scope with the BDC. What do ya know it worked..... I was a kid in high school and didn't know that I shouldn't take that shot. A couple of years ago I shot an old 6 point at 300 yards. Everything else has been less than 100 yards.

I shot a doe at around 350 on the trot once. I’m not proud of this story but I was young and dumb. It was completely lucky and no skill involved whatsoever. Me and a couple of my buddies were in town for the holidays and had hunted that morning. We were back at the truck and a group of does started crossing the field we were in. We started slinging lead and dropped 2. Best we could tell one was by one my bullets and one from an old crusty retired 1SG’s.

Just a hair over 200. 1989 in Russell county at a place called Uchee. Hunting with the father of the girl I was dating at that time. It was so damn cold that weekend, when I woke up in the morning and walked in the den of the camp house, there was still ice in the glass of my Crown that I had the night before! Last afternoon of our hunt and a doe stepped out in a narrow shooting lane. It was about to leave and was facing me. I put the crosshairs on the chest about halfway up and pulled the trigger. The deer dropped DRT. It turned out to be a small spike. The bullet went in at the brisket and exited just below the butt. Went slam through the entire length of the deer. Using the Win. Model 70 Featherweight in .270 with Hornady 140gr BTSP. I'm probably around 150 deer over my career and 90% of my of my shots have been under 100 yards.

Consider I could shoot 1,000 yards with a .30-06 and fixed 10x scope all day long....when I was a kid.... And you can too. Some of it is tricky but I could have you shooting at paper that far fairly quickly.

I killed that deer near Hollandale MS in the MS Delta right off the river.. Laid down on my shooting mat got out a Jarrett rifle wearing a Unertl scope and went to work. He just happened to come out of a woodlot that was not the one I was setup on. The STW was a wildcat at that time nobody had ever heard of it in the mainstream. Luckily I had made an old school range card and put that woodline on it.

All that being said I do not believe it is ethical to be making shots that far. A lot can and will go wrong and you'll wound the deer. I also don't have trouble getting closer because I can actually hunt deer. I decided to take the shot due to the surrounding circumstances... last weekend of the season. 10pt. All I got is a Polaroid somewhere in a closet maybe.

Re: Farthest shot you have ever made and killed a deer - 08/12/22 04:08 PM

125-150 yards through open hardwoods on Choccolocco WMA. Was walking in to hang a stand and shot a doe with my climber still on my back. Was pretty far back in there, shot her at 4 and didn’t get her out until around 7:30 that night. Learned a good lesson that day. If you are going to kill one for meat, either shoot them close to the road or shoot one that isn’t the biggest in the group.

Most everywhere I hunt, a shot over 100 yards is impossible. Heck I’ve never even shot past 100 at a range. Some of the above replies are downright impressive.

1st deer I ever shot was a doe at 170 yards running dead away with a 30-30 open sights. Hit it between the ears (I dont think that was where I was aiming). Earlier that morning I shot at a 125 inch 8 pointer 5 times at 70ish yards and never touched a hair on him. Buck fever.

Longest ever is around 300 yards, but other than that one I dont recall shooting any others farther than 200.

You would have missed if the buck's chest was in your crosshairs. In the roughly 1/3 second the bullet needs to travel 335 yards, a deer trotting at 10 MPH will move about 5 feet.

I shot one running full speed across a pasture bout 100 yards he made it to the end n fell I clipped his neck, I was aiming towards the front n hoping lol u gotta be swinging the gun at running deer or get lucky...mainly lucky but I don't try that often

Re: Farthest shot you have ever made and killed a deer - 08/12/22 08:22 PM

Back in th' 70's when there were BIG Soybean Fields would "TRY" shots at 300 to 450 yards as the Farmers wanted you to kill as many as possible....had many Opportunities. Usually kill maybe 1 out of every 4 attempts at that range. I shot a Remington 700 30-06 back then with Western 150 grain "Silvertip" Ammunition and a Redfield 3-9X "Widefield" Scope. Never hunted out of a shooting house with a good prop back then....just small platforms in trees,

Re: Farthest shot you have ever made and killed a deer - 08/15/22 03:09 AM

doe at 366 yards across what used to be a cornfield right at dark in a light rain on Christmas eve in choctaw county

Laid in the prone position on the ground and placed the crosshairs at the top of her shoulder

Hit her about 10" low and shattered both of her front legs. She drove with her hind legs with her chin on the ground out of the field and into a small creek with real steep sides.

I didn't find any blood in the field but I did see skid marks in the dirt where she bulldozed her way out of there on her chin/chest...as I got into the tree line I could hear her thrashing around in the water moaning in pain.

I had to climb down in the creek and finish her off. It was brutal and unfair to the animal and made me sick at my stomach. I haven't taken a shot like that since then and won't ever again.

My best shot was 285 out of a Summit climbing stand, ranged at a buck that was moving and stopping periodically in a young cutover. Had to squeeze in the shot when he stopped where I could see him. Shot another doe at 305 in the same cutover out of the same stand later in the year. Had a 150" plus ten point in that cutover that I never could get settled on good enough to squeeze the trigger. That one still haunts me.

The pronghorn on the left is the buck from 584 yards. He had a doe with him and she ran around and stopped at 586 yards. The 626 yard pronghorn was a doe.

This is a Hartmanns Zebra (aka Mountain Zebra from
Namibia. Zebra are extremely tough to hunt and bring down. (For those that will say it’s just a horse)

This is my best mulie and my longest shot on a mulie.

I’ve shot numerous springbok of 5 different sub-species. I’ve never shot one less than 200 yards and most were over 300 yards. The is one is the farthest I’ve connected with but I’ve missed several at much farther just trying to hit one.

The tahr hunt was one of the most physical hunts I’ve ever done by far. The shot was tough but the climb up and back down was special to say the least. The chamois was certainly the most difficult shot I’ve ever made. I was sitting on a rock aiming the rifle straight down between my feet.

This whitetail was taken in Saskatchewan in deep snow. I had him at less than 100 yards but he spooked and ran to the next ridge top. He stopped to have a look and shouldn’t have. wink

988 yards confirmed, made several across crop fields in the 7s and 8s. Also crippled a bunch trying.

466 yards with a Remington 700 chambered in 280 Rem. Killed several at 300-350 yards but it's a lot further than I like to shoot.

I have a 6-284 Win proven on prairie dogs at 1043yds, maybe I need to set up on some powerlines this fall?

Killed 1 at 360 (range finder), killed a yote at just over 500. I LOVE to shoot long range but too much can happen to do it regularly on deer. Most of the time it’s in the woods and I have my .444 Marlin.

I used to shoot steel at 1k with my 6.5-284. It’ll put one down at that distance if you do your part.

8-point touch over 300 (ranged), If I remember correctly 330..

Most less than 100yds, several around 150yds, and a few over 200yds only the one over 300.
