Monroe County Rut Question

Monroe County Rut Question - 01/25/22 12:59 PM

New to Monroe County on a smaller property. Don’t have many bucks and the ones we do have are young. We also only have a handful of does. Just noticed within the past week the bucks are separating from one another. Is this about time for rut in Monroe county? Seems kind of late bc I’m hearing of major rut activity way further south.

It is. I was just looking at some videos I took last year on our place. They kicked into gear on the 22nd by my cameras and personal observations.
Where are you in Monroe county? We are half way between Beatrice and Franklin.

We are dead center between Old Texas and Butler Springs. Someone said they thought it began around the 14th but the does are still with their fawns, and surely by now they would have separated from them if that was the case. I’ve heard of Baldwin Co. rut in full swing and even the Creola area.

I had a place between Frisco City and Perdue Hill for 10+ years and we always saw the most rutting activity Jan 8-12 and Feb 6-10. Some years you wouldn't have known it happened if not for trail cam pics of big bucks chasing does in daylight.

I hunt up above Beatrice . I saw a nice buck trailing a doe on Sunday . And shot a good one last year on the 24th of January . I would be in the woods now till the end of the season

Only daylight pictures we’ve had are of younger bucks early morning and late afternoon. The oldest buck we have on camera is probably 3.5 yrs old if i had to guess and he’s still showing up late at night. We haven’t seen any new bucks either. Which has had me confused on how counties way further south are in rut.

I’ve been hunting my place for 17 years. Many years it really kicked off right around the 20th but as late as the 28th and sometimes as early as the 14th or thereabouts. We still have a few does with fawns but I saw one kicking at a fawn last weekend. The bachelor groups have only recently broken up on our area. Maybe 2 weeks ago.

I only get to go on Saturdays unfortunately but I’m really using this year to more less take a census of the property.

Ok, maybe it’s just bc this weather has been too screwed up this year.

We are just to the NW of you in Pine Apple. I saw several 3 year olds chasing this weekend. I also saw a bunch of bucks cruising for does. I have several mature bucks chasing on camera. Our bucks split up months ago but, for some reason, I have been getting the young ones grouped up again lately. I guess they figure they have a better chance with numbers. Today (the 25th) is our benchmark date historically for all out rut. We have killed several mature deer on this date and most of them were chasing. We kill them before and after that date but most of the mature deer we kill are right around that window.

I believe it’s just hard to tell bc we haven’t seen any mature bucks on the property, or as far as I know there hasn’t been any on camera. We just came across some really fresh scrapes and rubs on Sunday.

We are definitely in rut now. Had a wide 8 point strolling through and at least a 10 point come in around 4 this morning. Possibly bigger but hard to tell by the picture.
