School deer hunts - 12/22/21 05:28 PM

I'm looking to go on a school sponsored deer hunt for 2023. Anyone ever been on one or have experiences with them? Looking for recommendations or places to avoid.

The first I ever went hunting was at the Monroe academy deer hunt in Monroeville, AL. I was 32, I am 38 now so only 6 years ago. I had one of the best times of my life. I shot my first doe there. Got it processed at Beatrice sausage. They had a wild game feast for us on Saturday night. Good food and great people. They had a raffle and I won a Henry 22 golden boy lever action rifle. I liked the people and the woods so much I just bought 92 acres in Marion right on the Hale county line. The folks there are just the same as the people in Monroeville. I went to the Montgomery county lions club deer hunt maybe 3 years ago. I paid for the premium hunt. I got to stay at Mr.Cooks cabin on his own private farm in Camden. We didn’t get to go the the dinner that the lions club put on because we were too far from Montgomery. I didn’t see anything on his property. I had a good time but it was nothing like The experience I had at the MA deer hunt.

bumping this up to the top. does anybody bowhunt on these or just rifle? or it depends on the property they are on and contact the hunt organizer? i got something lined up for this season and will be most likely going rifle bc I'm taking my buddy and want to get him his first buck. but want to try and make this an annual trip every january and would be interested in bowhunting the rut if it were a viable option. thank you.

I hear the Wilcox deer hunt is really good

I went on the Wilcox turkey hunt and had bad luck - we did not hear much - but there are some big nice land owners there

Stickers do y’all do a turkey hunt and if so how is it? Trying to find ground I can atleast hear a turkey on

We have a couple of guys that bowhunt on our "gun hunt" in January. (Wilcox Academy) I would think this would be an option that the hunt organizer at whichever school could discuss. Some of the guides are better suited for guiding a bowhunter than others. I am not aware of any school that does a bowhunt only at a different time.

Thanks swamphunter. I have a deposit already on a hunt for this season but heard good things about the Wilcox hunt and definitely one we will consider for the future. My buddy is stationed in new Orleans so Camden being closer is also aa bonus. Appreciate the insight

We have guys who bow hunt, but most "charity hunt " stands are set up for rifle. We allow folks to bring ground blinds, climbers if they want. They usually end up in a stand with a rifle or put their ground blind on a food plot. Just not enough time to scout for bow spots late season( mid January) on 3 day hunt. When I guided, I had to have the hunter attend a couple years before I would trust them in a climber.
Have not heard of any bow hunt only charity events.

My son and I went to the Marengo Academy hunt one year and had a great time but I think that school closed. We went to the Gordo band hunt a couple of years and had a good time inspite of bad weather both trips.

Thanks everyone for the responses. sounds like I shouldn't be too picky and just bring my rifle and have fun. Good luck to everyone this season

Ok thanks for info and advice. Has anyone ever been on one of these school charity hunts? Does seem like something I would be interested in pursuing.
