Fred T Stimpson - 09/11/21 01:01 PM

I got drawn for the January 27th archery hunt. That’s prime time rut where I typically hunt. Just wondering from some of you guys that know the place, if it’s worth giving up a weekend or prime time to go down there?

Absolutely worth it. I hunted the late Jan/early Feb hunts there a couple years ago. Saw 83 deer in three days. Several of them were solid bucks too

I agree. I was hoping for that one

I hunted last year Jan 14th hunt. It took me a few days to get dialed in but I was on deer the last two days. I had a good buck chase 3 does right under me but I just couldn't stop him.

It's amazing to see you guys talking about how great Simpson is later in the year. Me and my dad hunted it on the first October hunt last year and only saw two deer the whole time. There was only one little doe killed between everyone that weekend. Goes to show what a difference the time of year can make I guess.

A lot really depends on the river level. Real high = incredible.

This right here. If that river floods all the deer and pigs get pushed up into the high ground and it’s awesome. Also the section I hunted was pretty much all young pines and sage. I figured out real quick that all the deer were bedding on my section and crossing over into private to feed (assuming there were feeders on the private) so I hunted trails leading to the private and saw deer all day every day of the hunt.

It’s going to depend on what section that you get assigned. I was on the same hunt that coosa saw all of those deer and we didn’t see anything like that. We had plenty of deer in our section, but it was lacking bucks for sure. The biologist there told us that the bucks liked to hang out in the pines and all we had was steep hardwood hills. We managed to kill 4 does between me and my buddy and really don’t have any complaints, we like to kill deer with our bows.

I can almost guarantee the Tombigbee river will be high in late January!

Section 12 is where it’s at. Been on that section like 4-5 times now. Feels like home away from home grin

Is there a place to primitive camp on it?

Yes, there’s a bunch of cleared area around the check station where they let people camp.

Well I drew unit 15. From the aerials it doesn’t look like my cup of tea. What kind of info y’all got on it?

Curious if anyone has info on Section 13?
Coosa1, I know you hit 12 pretty hard... Right next to 13...
My son and I will be there for the mid-Jan hunt...

Check my reply to this thread. Lots of deer on 12 that move in and out of the bordering sections.

On 15, there’s a field where two roads fork. Hunt the back left corner of the big section on the left.

I was at full draw on a 130-140” 8 at 10 steps on unit 15 but never got a shot. Pm me and I’ll share my experiences as I was within 80yds just about every hunt of shooter bucks. I could’ve piled does up but didn’t want to fool with any.

Do they have youth hunts going on the same time as the adult archery?
