Season length spinoff... - 02/25/21 09:35 PM

Who had the idea to let the bow hunters have first crack at em anyway? Ans what's the reasoning...Just sayin!!!! Let's open rifle season in October and let it go 2-3 weeks and then let the bow hunters have them until the lull. Close the season for some length and then when the rut starts roll the guns back out there.

and FWIW it isn't gonna happen anyway but talk about some bucks getting laid down!!!

I'm with you, bow hunters can start 3 weeks after gun season, and they can end on Dec. 31st.

Nah man, first couple weeks of bow season with nobody else in the woods is bliss!
After the first full week of gun season they change their patterns. I love bow season being early. I don’t bow hunt as hard as I use to, but I wouldn’t dare change that!

hunt with the bow all you want. No need for a separate season.

without the bowhunters slinging sticks for a month before gun season, the same would be true for the opening couple weeks for everyone.

I’m in for this. No sense in holding up the fun for three bowhunters, two of which use crossbows.

I wish they’d bring bow season in on the first Saturday of October.

Should be Oct 1st every year no matter the day of the week.

I’d be ok with that also.

It’s Oct 1 in Mississippi and the few years I’ve lived here it’s been 80 that day most years. But I usually hunt it anyway.

Our archery season opens in mid September and firearms season starts in mid October. Firearms closes at the beginning of January and archery season goes on till January 15 I believe. Also got 2 weeks of primitive season in there. It’s a very long season here too.

. January 15th, our area hasn't even started the rut.

That’s the difference. A lot of Louisiana has a more traditional fall rut.

They may have a traditional rut , but the big difference is several zones and dates, not one size fits all like Chuck and Co. saddled us with.

Anybody can kill ‘em with a gun. Well, judging by all the “need a dog” posts, I guess that isn’t really true.

Why don’t we just have no closed season or bag limits on deer. Sure seems like what some people want!!

Re: Season length spinoff... - 03/01/21 01:57 PM

One week of rifle and one week of shotgun is coming. And crossbows only during shotgun season

That is exactly correct, you can drive less than 75 miles and have an entirely different rut sequence. Some will be rutting in early December, some at the end of January or early February.

Big insurance won't allow for the season to be much shorter

In Kansas, gun hunters have to wait until the rut is long over before they can go. Bowhunters get exclusive access for the entire rut.

. Time for some to go hunt Kansas and leave Alabama, I hear Nebraska and Iowa are good for some too.

What’s wrong with just having deer season? Hunt them with whatever you like. Traditional bow, compound, crossbow, flintlock, percussion black powder, fire stick, air gun, shotgun or rifle...

Re: Season length spinoff... - 03/06/21 01:24 PM

I am just happy when season gets here and feel blessed to be able to hunt and I Lov hunting in Alabama

Good point on the different weapons Orion

I am not going to worry about what some dude hunts with that I likely will never meet or hunt within 10 miles of - lot of wasted energy or worry there - that’s just hating to me when others bash what somebody else is hunting with especially if it’s legal

Use a cannon if u want to - if your not my neighbor - I want care

Re: Season length spinoff... - 03/06/21 01:28 PM

The reason for regulating different weapons is the same reason for having the 3 buck limit. It's all a means of regulating the number of deer that we kill. It's just a matter of how we get there.

I think that was once a good thing. Maybe even helpful. Not anymore. Especially with a limit in place and with the blurring of the lines between types of gear.

And, thank goodness they don’t yet regulate saltwater fishing the same way. Can you imagine? We’d have a cane pole season, then a fly fishing season...

So you bow hunters are willing to give up your compound bows and cross bows and go with a traditional bow and no broad heads?
Posted By: Mdees

Re: Season length spinoff... - 03/06/21 08:46 PM

Hand thrown spear only. No closed season. Limit one deer per year.

. There are several type of points for bows, yet the broad head is the most common. I'm just saying that if these bow hunters want to squash gun hunters, then they should be giving up something as well.

Re: Season length spinoff... - 03/07/21 03:01 PM

I would rather have to spear hunt and be allowed to kill what I want and how many I want versus being allowed to tote 1000 yard sniper rifle and only being allowed 1……… That's hypothetical but I'm just trying to make a point. The current system that’s limits people by “x” number of bucks does not fit the landscape well. You have drastically different populations from area to area and “3” is not the same on every property. Not even close…..The same could be said for doe management.....Managing numbers through going to a more bow hunting oriented system is a better fit in my opinion because harvest numbers would be dictated for the most part by the number of “opportunities”……

For example, with a bow in areas of high deer density it would be possible for a guy to kill say 10+ deer a year because he would likely get plenty of opportunities to shoot…and that would be ok because there are plenty of deer in this scenario and the land can most likely sustain what can be killed with a bow with no problems.. In areas of low deer density the hunter may likely go home having not killed a deer because the two he saw never got into range…..In which case, in this situation from a deer management perspective…..those two deer probably didn’t need to get shot anyways…..( I said from a deer management perspective Clem grin) With a gun they likely would have been……To me this better balances the whole system without having to make a detailed list of everything you can and cant shoot and all the hoops you have to jump through once you do.
