Feeder spinoff.....trough feeders

Planning on making one for next season. For those that use and like them, what is a good choice for feed? Also, how in the heck do you keep the coons from eating up all the feed?

I prefer a feeder than a trough. For one I can put them on my time and go through way less feed. I have tried feed troughs and the deer knew feed was there so they were doing the major or feeding at night. And the hogs and coons would crawl up in them and eat 300 lbs of corn in a night or two

I'd love to hear some dimensions on the trough feeders for those that use them and deer frequent them. Most roofs don't look wide enough, from some pictures I've seen. I'm sure some designs are better than others. Width, height, depth, roof overhang and height of roof. I'm talking for mature bucks to feed out of it. I know doe and yearlings will eat out of fairly quickly. Would love some pictures. I've had people tell me they wouldn't eat out of their trough feeders, was wondering why?

The Bammer deer probably put on their crimson goggles, so they don't mind.

I'm not sure you could build a wide enough roof to stop hard, sideways rain completely. Mine will catch some water during really strong storms so I knocked a few drill holes in the bottom of them and they drain fine. Deer eat the corn fast enough around my place that it doesn't spoil even if it gets wet. They'll eat wet corn just fine I've found out, too.

One thing is even after months of being out the deer are still sketched out by the roof. I think I built it a little too tall and based on what I saw on cameras and hunting deer were always giving the eyeball up at the roof part.

Trough size on mine are 3 feet by 5 feet with 2x6's and a plywood floor. Legs are 4x4s. It can hold about 400-450 pounds slap full.

Coons get to all corn in feeders. No matter what kind. I have only had one pic of a hog in the trough feeders in the last 5 years. This was no ordinary hog, this was a giant.

Also with as much rain as we got this winter we did not lose one single bit of corn. I mean when it rain sideways, its getting in anything. We drilled some holes in the bottom (which is plastic 50 gallon drum) and it drains perfect. No perfect feeder but the trough's work best for us.

We also dont have to fill them up very often which limits the amount of times we have to go. We like that.
