Trespasser: Private Land - 01/27/20 07:25 PM

Private land. Gate entrance (was opened). Saturday 12:15pm. Driveway from main road is 1 mile long (gravel).

Loading up a deer with buddy we see a truck going down drive way through the woods I'm in, never seen it before. Jump on 4-wheeler, get up behind him, doesn't stop or slow. Had to wait for spot to go around and block him so he has to stop.

Me: What are you doing over here ?
Him: Oh I don't hunt, I'm riding around lookin at land, I might buy me some out this way.
Me: You didn't see this road had a big red gate?
Him: Yes
Me: So you saw the posted signs on it ?
Him: No
Me: What about the other 10 posted signs you passed on this road, you see them or you hard of seeing ?
Him: No, didn't see them either
Me: Whats your name ?
Him: Jim
Me: Jim what
Him: Jim UYKLMNHYGT (mumbled it after I asked twice)
Me: (Diggin to get my phone out) Tell you what you're going to do, you're going to turn this truck around and head out, I'm going to follow you back out to the road but I'm going to snap some pics of your face and tag number before you go.
Him: Why are you doing that ?
Me: Cause you're an idiot who either cant read or got big balls and up to something. (Snap face pic, Walk to back snap tag)
Me: Don't come back here, ever, you're not welcome, understand ?
Him: Yep

Don't happen just on lease land, idiots, thieves and no gooders will try anybody. That's one reason I carry wherever I go on my land, crazy people are EVERY where. That's the 2nd trespasser this year I've caught.

These people just feel entitled to it because 4 generations ago people just hunted.... well 4 generations ago there weren’t ambulance chasing lawyers looking to sue you for every little thing either

Re: Trespasser: Private Land - 01/27/20 07:35 PM

Sounds like you caught someone that knew what they were doing. Bet they hated you got their face picture and tag. It's my policy to just flip my phone onto video and get the whole interaction on camera. Keeps everyone honest and if it ever came down to talking to the law their wont be any "he said/she said" to sort out, or at lot less of it.

I would have had to fire the opposite direction just to see the guy chit himself. "OH, my bad I didn't see you there running around on our hunting club, was shooting at that hog down the other side of the powerline." Did the member say something to him?

Looks like a public atv trail. That guy should have been riding a 4wheeler and nobody would have noticed him

He yelled at him and asked him if he was an idiot. The guy said " I guess I am". The member had his small kid with him in an elevated shooting house, so there wasn't much he could do with the guy. He asked him to come to the stand to get a better picture, but the guy ran away from him into the woods..

We have had several encounters with trespassers and poachers. One thing Ive learned is they all will lie on you if given the chance. I always try to start my phone videoing by the time I get to them. even if im not pointing it at them it catches the audio. The last poacher I went to court with had a totally different tale about our conversation than what actually happened. 8 minutes of video proved him to be a liar to the judge and it ended up costing him about $5k when all said and done.

RMart I should have done that but my mind was else where. It'll be on my mind next time for sure, that's a great idea and could possibly keep me out of trouble at the same time. I'd love to hear the story about this guy your talking about so I could educate myself and others I'm sure since we all deal with this problem. Pulling gun, firing shots is all big boy talk on the keyboard and a little fun I know so how you handled it and got results legally would be a great teaching tool for us. Can you ?

Since I've had this land (4 yrs) I've had a total of 4 trespassers, 2 I caught red handed, the other two were on trail cam with good vid & sound. I posted about one of them a while back. Had a meeting scheduled with my other 2 neighbors thanks to a neighbor introducing himself and setting that up. Come to find out the "arrow head" hunters were my neighbors sons, grown men. I showed him the vid and he told me I would never have to worry about that again. They were at his place for thanksgiving holiday and said they were board. All the same, it was taken care of and gave me some relief that it wouldn't happen again.

Re: Trespasser: Private Land - 01/27/20 09:17 PM

I may have shared this before, I'm not sure so if I'm repeating, suck it up.
My uncle, who gave me this land had a few rifles I was interested in. I picked up one and asked what did he want for this one and he said I cant sell you that one, it don't belong to me. He tells me that he was down in our swamp couple years back and found a guy jacked up in a climber. He saw the orange hat and drove over to him and went through the convo of what are you doing, your trespassing, blah blah. So he tells the guy, go ahead and lower your gun down and climb down. When the guy lowered his gun down, he took it off the pull string, got back in his muley and said, if you want your gun, come to XX road my number is XX. Guy never came. That's one way of doing it. I know that prob aint legal, but it's old school.

Re: Trespasser: Private Land - 01/27/20 09:40 PM

My buddy and I went check a piece of property that wa have a couple miles down the road from our main chunk of property this morning. It’s split by a public road. As we are driving down the road we see a white frog F150 pull in one of our driveways and goes up the road and stops. We pull up behind the truck and I get out and walk up to the truck all Johnny bad ass style. Truck has dark tented windows and I tap on the rear of the door and the guy rolls down the window and says “Hey Mr. Hebert how you doing” and busts out laughing. It was the our forestry guy in his new truck. We shook hands and chatted for a minute and went on. He did say I had good technique in approaching a vehicle. rofl

Re: Trespasser: Private Land - 01/27/20 10:52 PM

A couple of the guys I hunt with were sitting at camp the other day and 2 guys come jogging up the road through our property. They ran right through the gate that was open down from camp, right past the "POSTED" signs on both sides/posts of the gate. They didnt stop until my buddies got out of the truck and started hollering at them. Then they just turned around ran right past them and back out the gate. People are crazy. I have to say if I had been there they may have heard something other than hollering when they ran by. Nothing like the sound of buzzing lead going over your head followed by rifle recoil as a warning.

That would be very easy to fix, just be sure the bullets get close but dont hit him. Id say about three shots with a high powered rifle hitting that dirt right in front of him and he would never be back.

Got these pics a couple of days ago. Sadly, it's my worst camera. It takes bad pics and won't store date and time, but it shows I've got a poacher on this little spot that I have permission to hunt. Landowner is out of town, so he hasn't seen this yet. I will encourage him to prosecute if we can catch the bastard. [Linked Image] [Linked Image]

Young, are you saying the time is wrong? If the time is right, that's odd. Obviously a guy with a gun. If going to a stand/spot, he should have been there. If stalking, he better get that gun off his shoulder. It looks like he has a certain destination in mind. I would try to find his destination and keep an eye on it. Mashed leaves where he sat by a tree, gum wrappers, etc.

Re: Trespasser: Private Land - 01/28/20 01:12 AM

Young, I'm thinking a lot could be going on with that picture. Looks like he is on a road. Do you park at the same spot every time you hunt the property? Do you go in at the same time? Could be watching for you and if you're not there by 4:30 he hunts it for you?

I had this happen on my fil land I'm standing at a crossroad going back to my truck. I here something coming up rd at a trot so i shoulder my rifle and go to my knee thinking its a deer trotting up rd. There was a small curve in rd so I couldn't see what it was . Around the corner come a guy in his running attire. He kinda flinched off to one side, I bet he never ran that property again. We talked for a bit, turns out he was a doctor that lived near by and didn't think it was hunted. So not all trespassers are up to no good some are just stupid.

Re: Trespasser: Private Land - 01/28/20 01:23 AM

A lot of people believe a power line is public access. Right or wrong, they do. A lot of 'em.

The guy in his jogging togs probably is one of them. Would be better to calmly explain to folks like this they're trespassing, it's hunting season and things could turn out badly.

Unfortunately, too, a lot of people get on land where they rarely see anyone and think it's fine to trespass. "We're not doing anything, we're just looking around. We're just hiking-trail running-jogging-whatever."

It's a damned shame that signs have to be posted to make people possibly understand it's not open land. They shouldn't phucking be there in the first place no matter what they're doing, unless they're truly lost and trying to find a road or way out.

Don’t do that. I had pictures of a trespassers vehicle and thought I’d better ask Skinny before posting. He asked me not to. I’d run it by the boss first. We’re playing in his house.

Re: Trespasser: Private Land - 01/28/20 03:06 AM

The land owner lives there. What I am hunting is only 17 acres of thin planted pines, but it is right next to a large old clear cut. That road is what I am hunting, but I only go a couple of times a week. I guess it is possible he is going into the clear cut but he is trespassing by using that road. I've got a better camera hid there now, so we'll see. Also, I will drive by more just before sun-up and check more often. By the way, here's a pic of one of the bucks that comes out of that clear cut. [Linked Image]

So, how do you stop a poacher/trespasser when he lives next to your lease which means he is there all the time and you are not. He has stolen cameras, stands and now apparently he is turning off a feeder that he he doesn't approve of. He has 2 stands that I know of that are on the property line and can easily hunt our side. I would love to put up a cellular game camera but no way I would risk it getting stolen.

Not trying to be a downer....but you get a new lease. Even if you have him arrested it might just make it worse for you. If he is alone maybe, but if his buddies and relatives are in on it you might be fighting this battle for 20+ years.

Go talk to him and tell him you're having a problem. Don't accuse him. You won't teach anyone a lesson. If you try, you will lose.

He knows when you're not there, obviously.

If you have a camphouse, go with a buddy or two and make a show of doing stuff. Act like you're putting up cameras, checking feeders, the works. Maybe even shoot a few rounds at a target.

Then, your buddies leave but you stay and go full ninja. If you have a camphouse, no lights or fire. If no camphouse, take a one-man tent, bag and some jerky and water.

Bust his ass trespassing and stealing your cameras or phucking around with your feeder, and KHASB right there because he was acting in a threatening manner to you. Then call the sheriff's office and say you caught a trespasser who threatened you and you're waiting on assistance to come have him arrested.

Or, be sensible and try what Rem suggests.
Posted By: ParrotHead89

Re: Trespasser: Private Land - 01/28/20 07:17 PM

I like what Rem. said you know its him. But ask him if he as seen anyone over there and if he does to call you. Tell him you hid some cell train cameras around to catch whoever it is. Make him think there is trail cam on every tree.
