I’ve shot the dwarf buck! Need a nose in Millbrook

I’ve shot the dwarf buck! Need a nose in Millbrook - 01/22/20 08:39 PM
Headed back down around 8pm to press on. No blood for first 30 yards. Blood started when he entered the woods. Tracked decent blood for 100 yards, then backed out for 5 hours. Went back in and picked up for another 300 or so, but had to come back for meeting. Still on blood. Will be headed back after dinner. Figured a dog has a better chance of recovering quickly. He gave aim small miss small all it could handle.

Short, pretty sure he took a coon trail as a getaway to throw us.

Shaw might be able to ride him. If they’re shorter do you think their kill zone is smaller?

This would be a good one to guess the weight on since we know you will find him. I would guess 110lbs.

Make sure you check suspicious large oaks with doors on them. Also, a dachshund can check rabbit and fox holes. In all seriousness, good luck i can’t wait to see him.

If the 400 yard and “decent” blood part is accurate - probably the for the best, but I’d be nervous either way.
Hope he’s found today - good luck!

If he's still trailing 'good' blood after 400 yards, there's a problem.

Re: I’ve shot the dwarf buck! Need a nose in Millbrook - 01/23/20 05:05 PM
Sorry for the delay. Tracked until 1AM. No luck. Frustrating to say the least. I've spoken with a few of the dog trackers on here, all willing, but we've got a property line issue and I can't reach the owner of the property. The owner listed on ONx has passed away within the last year, so I have no idea where to start. Her name was Carol Lemon Roy if anyone has any affiliation with the area.
To rehash - shot around 8 am, buck had just been broadside and was now slightly quartered with its head down grazing. I did have to lean around a tree to shoot, but was steady for the shot. It punched him and he ran off crashing through woods. I suspected he was headed down. I waited a little bit, climbed down, packed up, etc. I walked to where I shot him, found no blood and was shocked. Went about 30 more yards and found a spec, then more, then more. When I say decent, I am saying enough to easily track at a brisk pace. Went back and looked at my GPS and I initially tracked somewhere between 80-100 yards. There were some chunks of meet, but no guts or odor. I pulled back out, waited five hours and went at it again. GPS showed second track was only about 200 yards way of the bird. Still blood where I eventually stopped the second track, but was going through a few places where it was only a few drops - the pine straw wasn't helping. Marked last blood and pulled out again. Buddy and I went back down around 9 last night, picked up for another couple hundred yards, but soon after we started blood was getting really thin, and it looked like he would throw a clot and bleed a little, then back to hardly any. Where we stopped it was down to a fleck every 4-6 ft., then we lost it all together. Spent 30 mins at last spot carefully looking and just couldn't find anymore. He was headed toward water and the thick(er) stuff. At one point, about 20 yards before the blood ran out, there was an 8-10" circle of a number of good blood drops, like he stopped and stood for a minute. The blood was thinner than the other as if it was coughed up or dripping, but he never laid down. Didn't smell of guts. Frustrating.

If he didn’t bed up after that distance he isn’t mortally wounded I would suspect

Been on tracks very similar and rarely good results. Might not even be dead at this point. Bullet didn’t get in the motor anywhere don’t sound like.

Correct. He's gonna be okay unless if someone else doesn't kill him.

Sorry man but I’ve tracked enough to know that’s likely a flesh wound or leg shot. Deer will probably be fine.

I ended up speaking with Carol’s daughter, very nice lady. She would have given us permission, and also said to let her know if I had any other incidents moving forward. Tracker and I agree with the amount of rainfall, and lack of blood, this unicorn is more than likely going to live so we are not going back. The positive in all of this is that I’ve met my neighbor and she will allow us to recover future kills. Sorry for the dull end. I’ll keep the game camera rolling and see if he pops back up, but I don’t see how he could afford to lose a leg.
