Sick - 01/06/20 03:31 AM

Shot this deer yesterday on a friends place. Kinda a rushed shot found good blood for about 100 yards and then it quit like you turned off a faucet. Called in dog and spent 14+ hours looking and put a dog on him. Hoping he lives. I’m thinking it was a brisket [Linked Image]

I shot a fine buck last year. We found lung tissue and tons of blood.
Never found that deer and never saw any buzzards in the area. Sometimes it just ain't meant to be.

Sounds like brisket and if so it should live!

Any hide or meat along the trail? Brisket shot deer usually leave a small amount of hide or meat behind. Hopefully, you will get evidence that he made it or not. What sucks is the not knowing.

Found a bunch of greasy bright blood. The consistency of like mashed potatoes

Greasy definitely sounds like brisket.

Hunt long enough and it will happen. Just have to go back after them.

Re: Sick - 01/07/20 01:30 PM

I have been hunting them for over 40 years and still had that happen this year. I rushed the shot on a damn good buck chasing a doe. He was just shy of 200 yards and was about to go out of sight but stopped for a moment. I didn't have any support for my trigger side elbow and could not get the crosshairs settled. I thought I could pull it off by timing the trigger pull with the crosshairs crossing his shoulder. I know better but did it anyway. Right thing to do would have been to let him go. Only found some greasy hide and a few drops of blood where he stood for a while at a road crossing. That was it. I looked for about 6 hours even though I knew it was pointless. Still very disgusted with myself for that idot move.

Cool, funky rack. I shot one through the brisket almost facing me last season. No blood to track but found him 50 yards away dead.

5...4...3...2...1 time for someone to chime in saying they’ve never missed or lost a deer. Sorry man! Hope he shows back up!

I lost one in Missouri the second year we hunted there. Possibly the biggest 10pt I’ve ever seen. I was shook bad. I think I shot for the chest while looking at the rack. Found some dark grey hair and just a few drops of blood. Luckily a 12yr old kid killed him 2 days later just across the fence of the property we were hunting. We saw him trying to drag it out. We went help him and that’s when I saw the 4” gash in his brisket. It was a tall long tined 10pt with a sticker off one of the brows. It’s was the kids first buck. As much as I hated I didn’t kill it, I was very happy for the kid. We pulled it across the fence and loaded it in the truck and brought him and his trophy to his house. I had a pic of that kid and his deer. Gonna have to see if I can find it.
