How would you handle this? Giant buck... - 10/20/19 03:19 AM

I already know what I am going to do and probably won't be persuaded to do anything different, but the following happened to me last year and several years before that in the same spot with different deer and would like to see what y'all would do in this situation in detail. Of course I know what I am going to do but maybe this conversation may shed some new light on my thinking as I have not hunted this deer before but will this year.

1-12-13 4:45am mature buck crossed the road in front of me going west to east in the only place he can easily cross for 200 yards in either direction.

1-10-15 5:00 am mature buck crossed the road in the same spot. Different deer. Same direction.

11-14-18 7:¿¿ PM. See 3.5 year old stud 8pt browsing on the side of the road about 500 yards past where the "big buck" crossing is.

This 3.5 yo buck has 14" G2s and 10" G3s. Spread is level with his ears so about 14".

1-13-19 5:00ish. Same long tined buck crossed in the exact same place as the others, about the same time, headed in the same direction. I have been in the area they are headed numerous times. Of course on a north wind it is unhuntable. Looks like the main bedding area is on the southeast side of a hill. I'm not putting up a camera in there. I'm not setting foot in there till January.

All he’d do is try to jerk it off

I would say make sure and wear orange and have your flashlight on before dark. Timber 2 will be there soon. Hopefully he doesn't know where or who you are.

You need to follow the advice of Dan Infalt and try to kill him close to his bedding area. If you know where he's (or another bruiser) is bedding, you've got half the problem solved. I don't know of any reason why you should wait until January IF the bedding area is active at this time of year.

Well, if you got a real good wind or a good rain, I might go in there extremely early, like 0200-0300. Take a nap and be waiting at first light. Beat him there and have plenty of time for your scent to clear out. Question, what happens in January? If rut, that joker may get gone.
Good luck

I believe i would get a comfortable chair and watch the road crossing. Killed a few nice deer doing this.

If you know they are crossing the road in the same spot every year why not just hunt the road.

Don’t listen to some of these people and mess em up , be there 2-3 days on either side of the dates when these big bucks were there and hunt the road crossing from a distance . I’ve seen the exact same buck 1 year to the date crushing the same place on a few diff occasions where

Lota truth here. If you are 100% sure where he's bedding , I'd stay clear till the front end of pre-breeding, wait till conditions are just right. After breeding starts he may not be there. You need to have a good idea which way he'll come home a little late from a night of pre-breeding scraping and doe checking. However , if he's there now and moves about in the daylight , give him a try before pre-breeding, but don't screw it up. Slip in waaaay before daylight, the first time hunting is the highest percentage of a kill, once again, don't screw it up.Mature bucks are like grumpy old men , they wanta be left alone and won't tolerate humans in their bedroom. I don't know who Dan Infalt is , but I think he 's read my book.

Or just take up road huntin'.

Why can you not come in from south and hunt on a Northernly direction wind?

Nailed it that deer will be gone when the rut starts

May be possible. I've walked a mile out of the way , in the mountains, waaaay before daylight to get to the right spot on the right day . If you want to kill a special buck, you often have to use special tactics.

Lot of truth being said here. It is a major highway so hunting it is a no go. This hill he is bedded on, or all of them have, is an old grown up select cut pine plantation. Thick of course. Open cedars all the way around it. I don't think he is in there now but when he is cruising for the does in that bedding area, I will be high in one of those pine trees. He will be cruisin for a bruisin that morning. Knowing my luck he will get hit by a car before then though.

Don't take my advice but I have missed out on opportunities by waiting to hunt an area. Some other yahoo went in and screwed it up. Now if I see bucks using a certain area I hunt it now! You know they are using it now, they may not in the future. Why wait? I feel I have been to passive in the past and have gotten more aggressive with my hunting and being willing to change spots and it has paid off.

There's truth here too, depending on if others are hunting the area , time may be of the essence. I've been fortunate to hunted areas where I dictated when I set up on a particular buck , not other hunters.

I would check on entering from road in the county/ state I was hunting before doing that and if legal still wouldn't want someone to seem me entering. Got to go along with 2Dogs take a long walk and find a food source on opposite side if possible, come in near road if bedding far enough off road, cut a trail along out site of road. Stay away from bedding area, but near. Waiting on big buck is no guarantee even if you have 10k acres to yourself that boy is going to most likely travel.

Ghilley suit and watch the road. Get to the highest vantage point where you can watch the road. Good luck and post pics!

Sounds like you need to start keeping a gun in your truck.

If you have seen him, I'm betting you're not the only one. He'll be dead or gone long before the rut. You need to come up with a plan before someone else whacks him

Have someone push him off the hill while you’re in your gto ready and waiting. It’s not against the law to hit one with a vehicle 🤷🏻‍♂️

NO telling where those bucks will be in January.

Re: How would you handle this? Giant buck... - 10/22/19 01:23 AM

I'd go right after most of the leaves fall or right after gun season opens to pick my set-up and mark the tree I'd be climbing in January. Actually I'd pick a few trees so that on the morning when the time is right, I'd be ready for whatever wind and or be ready to change my plans according to whatever fresh sign I found on the way in. I'd make sure it was a cold day when I went to look and move slowly so as not to sweat. Rubber boots and gloves would be a must just in case he is already using the area. Some will say you will mess it up going in ahead of time, but it won't mess it up anywhere near as bad as fumbling around in the dark looking for the perfect set-up on the morning you plan to hunt him. I'd hunt pretty high if the canopy will allow it. By the way, you know what happens if you walk in scouting without a weapon don't you?

Good advice Muncher. Slip in give it a quick look and find a couple of trees, so you want be fumbling in the dark and climb wrong. You want every t crossed and every i dotted the first time you hunt the spot.
