Snake ID? - 10/12/19 02:32 AM
Bout stepped on this yesterday while scouting. Cottonmouth? Blocky triangle shaped head and thick bodied. 20 or so yards from a marshy area and creek.
Banded water snake....
That will bite your ass in a flash and put you in the hospital.

Can’t tell for sure without seeing the head but it does look like a cottonmouth

If I didn’t have my pistol I would have found the nearest thick limb and beaten that sob until my arms were tired. I never give a cottonmouth a pass.

Meaning that this is a color variant of cottonmouth or that they change color either throughout the year and/or during their lifespan?

The only good snake, is a dead snake.
Scouting without a pistol? You taking chances, man!

Good rule of thumb is if they got a thick ole body and coil up like that they're getting killed. Long skinny snakes are the good ones generally. Cottonmouths and copperheads both look like fat bodybuilders compared to a rat snake. Rattlers can be long and skinny, but at least they got a rattle to identify.

Geta LOONG limber piece of wood. sapling or limb. Beat it till its dead! Limberwith conform to the ground, a stiff piece of wood won't. Could get you bit too.
