Hairy Vetch

Hairy Vetch - 10/09/19 01:51 PM

Who’s ever planted it? I’ve always wanted to try some of the more expensive legumes so this year I set aside some area on the family farm. I have one spot about a half acre that I planted the vetch and frostmaster peas in. (There’s 3 other acres planted in various things as well). I’m curious how it actually does

I plant jointvetch every year as part of my summer planting. Grows like crazy and the deer love it.

I’ve planted hairy indigo before mixed in with the jointvetch and alyceclover and it did ok.

Never planted hairy vetch. Is this a summer or winter planting?

We have vetch growing wild in all our fields around here. Not sure if it is "hairy". It makes purple and yellow flowers and does have a little seed pod. It grows in the spring, fields will be covered up with it before the summer grasses start growing good. Never noticed if deer eat it, im sure they do, but its abundant at a time where theres food everywhere. I assume my grandaddy planted it a long time ago to build the soil and it hung around.

I plant hairy vetch as a winter cover crop for N credit but I don’t see it as a stand alone food plot choice. It makes a great mulch for no till planting summer food plots.

I’m fall planting for nitrogen credits as well. Frost master peas as well since both are legumes. But come on guys. I’m a 12 year old at heart too but every now and again can we please have a damn discussion without it get derailed.

You've been a member here for a decade and you're surprised a thread titled Hairy Vetch got sidetracked?

Just went to pee , I think I have a hairy vetch , looks like it must have been stunted by the drought this year .....

I cringe at vetch in any field. I hate that schit. So many better options out there

Good point. I had put up with a tremendous amount of BS yesterday work related and had a short fuse last night. Please continue.

Oh and trimming your hairy vetch will make the vetch look much bigger

Hairy Vetch makes a good green manure but let it get too tall, forget about discing it in. You will have to turn it.

Personally, I hope Aldeer never changes, I'm 72 and realized many years ago that all straight men are deep down still 12 year olds. Only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys. It is what it is
