Fertilizer Recommendation

Fertilizer Recommendation - 09/19/19 02:23 PM

With this dry weather i'm a little nervous about putting the normal amount of fertilizer in with my planting this weekend. It looks like we may have an inch of rain next week if we're lucky so I was going to do half of what is needed then wait till the plot is about 4" high then do the rest. Does this sound like a plan or do any of the wiser fellas on here have any other recommendations? Thanks in advance. Using 17-17-17 at 250lbs an acre.

I'll bet you a dollar you don't get a whole inch of rain next week grin

I'd be surprised if we get any at all until into October.

I'm not going to plant till the soil is wet, even if it is the 10th of Nov. One possible inch of rain isn't something I would count on.

You ever hear the old saying about advice. “Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn’t.”

I always put out 300lbs of 13-13-13 when we plant and then we hit them with AN at the rate of just 100lbs per acre when we know rain is coming. You are not going to hurt anything by applying the fertilizer when you plant. You may lose a few seeds that are actually touching a granular of fertilizer but that is why we overseed the recommended amount to allow for some seed loss due to birds and other factors.

But first of all, if you haven't had a soil sample tested, I would strongly advise doing so before you spend any money on fertilizer or seed.

I'd go ahead and put the fertilizer out when planting, there shouldn't be a problem with trip 17 burning anything if that's what you're worried about. Wait until about mid December before you hit it with more nitrogen and you'll be golden for the rest of the season. I would also recommend soil testing

we've always used triple 13 but last year as an experiment we used 33-0-0 (nitrogen) on one of our plots and boy did the seed come up and grow and the greenest of any of our other plots. we will be using it again this year on a few more. We got idea from a friend of mine that manages a golf course.

You get more than double the nitrogen with a bag of 33 0 0 vs a bag of trip 13, but you get no potassium or phosphorus. Do yourselves a favor and soil test and then you will know what you actually need

Soil test don’t test for N unless specifically asked and paid for. And it’s not cheap
