Old API Buckmaster Grand Slam Lock-ons

Old API Buckmaster Grand Slam Lock-ons - 08/22/19 02:28 AM

I had an old friend (BAD back and hip) give me five OLD API Buckmaster Grand Slam Lock-ons. I think they're the Buckmaster series but I know they're API; fairly large seat and platform to stand on. The stands themselves are in GREAT condition if you're just looking at the aluminum. The bolts are of course, rusted and the seats are falling apart and the cables are rusted. Cables should still be strong but I don't trust them! These lock-on's are thought to be approx 20 years old or so. Maybe more!

I'm going to replace all bolts (easy to do) but I'm wondering what y'all think on how to replace the seats and cables. Regarding the cables... your thoughts about 1/8" cable with ferrules and I'd use a swager crimping tool? I'd use high-grade bolts and washers in the crimped loops? I'm sure that technique will hold! Right? If done right.
The seats are like a rounded rectangle and good sized; but the seats HAVE to be replaced.

Anyway... Am I missing something or going about the refurbishment the right/wrong way? I can't find anything API or where I could order new seats.

General thoughts? And oh... I use LifeLines on all my lock-ons.

Thank you for your suggestions!

I would order replacement cables. You could make a seat out of anything.

I always replace my cables with chain when I think it's time. I believe(I know it when I see it) I have been using 3/16" galvanized chain from HD and some washers. I trust that chain and washers more than I do cables and ferrules. Cables always seem to break around the ferrule.

I'd order cables if I could find them. API of yesteryear is no more. I'm sure the swagger-crimped ferrules and 1/8" cables will be fine. Sometimes someone here on Aldeer enlightens me on something I hadn't considered. Thx!
