Re: Hauling deer with a car? - 07/15/19 02:57 AM

I hauled a deer in the very back seat of a station wagon once, had to dismember the damn thing to get it out of the car.

I killed a good sized nine point once with my brother. We loaded it in the trunk of a Datsun B210. Brother wrestled the rack around and into the trunk and closed the trunk. I knew then he would never make a deer hunter.

All it takes for my wife to just drive one around and the damn things throw themselves at it trying to jump into it.

Re: Hauling deer with a car? - 07/15/19 04:14 AM

I hauled one about 100 miles home on the trunk of a Mazda protege once. Laid it across the trunk, legs facing towards the car. Rolled down the rear windows and tied a rope between them, then rolled the windows back up most of the way.

Hauled a bunch of deer on a cargo carrier behind a Buick park avenue with a trailer hitch.

Also tied a bunch off on the spare tire on back of a jeep, across the roof, on the front bumper, etc

Bring some rope and you will figure it out.

I put part of a deer in the trunk of a 76 Camaro one time , rest kinda just hung on . Lol

I tied a rope from the latch to inside the trunk to hold him in .

The fist "hunting vehicle" I can ever remember was my grandaddy's old Plymouth sedan.
Of course that thing had a trunk the size of a garbage dumpster. We hauled deer in the trunk so the dogs could have room in the back seat.

Yep, those were the good ole days when a car would go where today’s truck would

When my truck was in the shop I hauled deer in the back of my wife’s Honda Odyssey, had to put down a tarp to keep from getting blood everywhere.

Re: Hauling deer with a car? - 07/15/19 12:32 PM

I thought about at one time a car towing a tiny trailer with an ATV on it wouldn't make a terrible setup depending on the roads.

Re: Hauling deer with a car? - 07/15/19 12:33 PM

I hauled the first deer I ever killed in the back of a Ford Pinto hatchback. Just put a tarp down and was good to go.

Re: Hauling deer with a car? - 07/15/19 12:52 PM

I was thinking about having one of those big plastic storage totes to throw the deer in and then put it in the trunk. That way all of the blood should be caught by the tote and you could just wash it out.

Have you considered a hitch and a basket rack? Or are you looking for the cheapest option? I’m assuming since you’re using car you won’t be in a situation where you’d be bottoming out, so the rack would be fine. Or, install a hitch and get a small trailer.

A 2005 huyndai xg350. I had a 2003 huyndai Santa fe which was a great SUV, it had a hitch and I had a cargo hauler i put on it. But decided to sell it since it had so many miles on it. Ended up buying the Xg350 because it only had 75,000 miles on it and i was able to pay cash for it. My dad has a Nissan frontier that we use when we go to the lease together and he'll let me use it iwhen I go on my own, but Im wanting something for when I get a chance to go on my own or go hunt public land and he also needs the truck.

Im looking for the cheapest option possible because I don't plan on having this car for more than a couple of years. Its just holding me over until I have enough money saved to buy a truck or another SUV.

Guy I used to hunt with was friends with the coroner. He got a couple of old body bags and loaded deer in those in the back of a pathfinder. He got some awesome looks at the processor when he pulled a body bag out of the back

I drug a 220lb 9pt wrapped in a tarp up in the back seat of my old 2008 corolla a few years back. Should've seen the look on the guys face at the processor when I opened the back door and 151" of bone flopped out the side of the car rofl

Growing up my dad use to haul ours in a Toyota Corolla. Nothing but legs hanging out. Of course that was in the good ole days.

Pulled a few up into the hatch back of an old Red Saab. Holy hell that stunk.

I’ll be in this same situation soon. I’m selling my truck to get a small daily driver car. I’ll be following this thread so when the time comes I’ll have plenty of ideas.

Re: Hauling deer with a car? - 07/15/19 03:06 PM

Get a pack of contractor bags from the hardware store. Fold, dismember, cut up as needed to fit deer in trunk. No mess, plenty strong enough to hold an entire deer and very low cost.
Posted By: blumsden

Re: Hauling deer with a car? - 07/15/19 03:15 PM

I'm not in this situation, but seems to me a hitch with a hitch hauler is a no brainer. Anything else would be a circus waiting to happen.
Posted By: hunter84

Re: Hauling deer with a car? - 07/15/19 03:53 PM

OR, you could just quarter it up and put in a cooler... if it's a buck your going to mount, put head and cape in large contractor type trash bag.

Re: Hauling deer with a car? - 07/15/19 05:54 PM

Buy you a cheap Nissan Versa like my hunting rig. The trunk on this joker is huge, easily enough room for two deer based on my testing, I need to find that picture.

Unless you like bloodstains in the trunk a tarp is a nice addition.

Re: Hauling deer with a car? - 07/15/19 06:36 PM

Tarps will leak and you'll eventually end up with blood/stink all over your trunk or upholstery. Get a mortar box from lowes or home depot. I'm not talking about the little 20 inch deals. They make one that is something like 60'x30"x12' Fits in almost all car trunks and SUVs. Just toss the deer in it, with the high sides and heavy plastic construction, it catches all the blood. Haul the deer wherever you want then just spray the mortar box out witha hose and you're back in business for the next one. I had one the whole time I hunted out of an SUV. Works like a charm. I saw some on the top rack by the tool rental section, the other day, at the Home Depot on 280.

Put down some heavy garbage bags. When done just throw away.

Re: Hauling deer with a car? - 07/15/19 08:14 PM

Jesus H Christ!!!!
Garbage bags????!!... Really????
Honestly I can't believe we're even debating this topic. You strap the damn deer to the hood or the roof, if it won't fit into the trunk. No bags, no tarp, no nothing. Just throw it up there and tie it on.

Re: Hauling deer with a car? - 07/15/19 08:50 PM

I hauled one about 3 1/2 hours back home on the spoiler of my Nissan 240 back when I was a teenager.

Helped a buddy get one out of the woods one time and hauled it on about a 20 minute ride back to his house with it just thrown across the hood of an old Nissan Maxima. We both rolled our windows down.....he held the front legs on his side and I held the back legs on the passenger side..

He's an idiot. But given only the choice between a front wheel drive car and a rear wheel drive car, I would take the front.

My dad shot his first deer on coosa wma a few years ago and we put it in the trunk of my moms Nissan Maxima. We get to the whataburger beside peach park then walk in to order. Cashier ask what did y’all get? We all just look at each other in confusion until we look outside and half the deer is hanging out of the trunk with it’s back legs dragging the ground haha

My dad has a great photo of he and his brother with a nice 8 on the trunk of Dad’s ‘66 Mustang. He bought it with his combat pay when he got back from Nam.
I once hauled one in the back of my Ford Bronco. The blood got in the carpet and the truck smelled like Death and Sickness for a time.
I’d planned to do my hauling on the spare tire but the buck weighed 205 and I was all alone when I shot it. It was all I could do to get it in the back of the Bronco. That was the foolishness of youth.
I’d take a big backpack or a cooler nowadays.

My brothers transmission was tore up in his trunk so we comindeered my step dads sports car and went hunting. Of course we haven’t killed anything all year and the one day we have to walk two miles to where we wanted to hunt we killed a nice buck. We drug that sucker at least a mile. Drove the car down some muddy hunting rd to close the distance. We figured our step dad would kill us if we put the deer in the car so we were excited and wanted to show the deer off so tied the thing to the hood and to the house we went. When we got home that white Mitsubishi 3000gt was covered in mud and blood. We were getting all kinds of looks thumbs up and horn honks on the way home. We made all rednecks proud

has everyone here forgotten that you can buy a tarp for around $10-$15 dollars? roll it up fold the ends over and throw it in the trunk.

We put a hutch on my grandmother Ford fusion and hauled deer out of the woods in a backet mounted in the hitch. Worked like a champ and saved a ton of gas.

Me and my cousin took his wife's car hunting one time. It wasn't until after we killed a big doe that we realized that we didn't have any rope, so we put the deer across the hood of the car right at the base of the windshield and it was basically laying on top of the windshield wipers. we rolled the driver's side and passenger's side windows down, and he held the back legs and I held the front legs all the way home. It was a cold ride, and my forearms were burning by the time we got there. Got some WILD looks at the Love's truck stop on exit 100.

Way back when I started driving I had a '66 VW Bug that I'd chopped, modified and turned it into one hell of a mud-eating machine. Took the passenger seat out and hauled literally tons of deer out of the woods with that thing over the a couple year period!

Re: Hauling deer with a car? - 07/17/19 04:05 AM

Thanks for giving me the chance to reminisce. I hauled two bucks at once in the back of a 1991 Ford Probe, a buck in a 1989 Honda CRX (and a tripod stand once too). When I was stationed in Germany I hauled hogs, roe deer, red deer, mouflon, and fallow deer in the trunk of a 2005 Ford Focus. Last example was hauling my nephew's first deer, a spike buck in the back of my Mom's 2003 Sentra. Apparently, some blood leaked down into the spare tire compartment and I didn't know about it until she hopped in the car one day and the stench parted her hair. LoL. Let's just say, I had some making up to do. Lastly, one of my favorite pics is of my Dad holding a 145" 12pt in the truck of his 1972 Duster.
I've always said rednecks are some of the most motivated folks on the face of the earth...when it comes to hunting/fishing, we don't need a $75,000 truck on 35"s to make it happen.

A 1973 Nova trunk could handle a buck with room to spare. I had a big tarp in the trunk. Hauled out many on the hood of a old army jeep back in the day.

My 76 Plymouth Volare station wagon hauled a bunch of gutted deer. Shortly after that I just started quartering everything. So much easier, and you can haul 2 quartered deer in the trunk of a dodge Lancer.

Aw come on now. We all know how you say you only drive 20 year old 400,000 mile vehicles around, so what do you know about todays vehicles? There was plenty of boats back then that easily hauled deer in the trunk. In reality, cars with trunks are going to the wayside and replaced with suv's. And yer givin too much credit to the small deer which make the majority in this area.

In college my 79 Toyota Celica Coupe hauled a few in it's time. When I got out and joined the working world one of my first big purchases was a pickup. Man I wish I had the Celica still. I am not a mechanic by any means, but anytime it had a problem, it was put together simply enough that along with my rudimentary mechanical knowledge, I could fix it myself. It helped though that if I screwed it up, I had a father, and a few uncles that could fix pretty much anything. That always gave me the confidence to try. You have no idea how many times I wished any of them, especially my father, were around to help me or just walk me through something or how many times I beat myself up for not paying attention and learning just some of what they could do, like welding for example. It certainly must skip a generation because none of that interested me when I was young but my son seems to have inherited some of the natural fix-it aptitude that I didn't get.
