Corn prices - 07/09/19 12:25 PM
FYI. Just got off the phone with St. Clair county co-op. A pallet of corn is 40 bags at 50lbs each, so 1 ton. It's $280 for a pallet, they cut you about .37 cents a bag if you buy a whole pallet. A 55 gallon drum is $43.80. It takes 5 drums to equate to a pallet. 5x$43.80=$219. So you save about $60 by buying drums , but then you have to bucket it out of there into something else and handle those heavy ass drums. Just food for thought.

how many pounds of corn does the 55 gallon drums hold?

Re: Corn prices - 07/09/19 01:58 PM
Pallet is 2000 pounds divided by 5 barrels equals 400 lbs for the mathematically challenged.

Re: Corn prices - 07/09/19 01:59 PM
55 gallon drum full is almost exactly 6 bushels @ 56 lbs each. So 336 lbs +/- a few pounds.

Depends on how clean the drum corn is..

I give $1/bushel over Dec19 on the CME trade for mine. It’s fair for my farmers I buy from. I’m happy. They’re happy

350 pounds is more accurate in my experience

Re: Corn prices - 07/09/19 04:30 PM
Listen to me and paw paw. 6 to 6 1/4 bushel of dry corn is bout all that's going in a 55 gallon drum. Bushel = 56 lbs.
Some corn is more dense or wet and that will make a lot of difference in the amount a 55 gallon drum will hold. If you buy from a farm, make sure it is dry or it will mold.

Re: Corn prices - 07/09/19 06:54 PM
For long term storage 14.5% moisture is where it needs to be at least.
Cheap bulk corn is great but if you don’t have a way to handle it, it’s tough.

Re: Corn prices - 07/10/19 11:29 AM
Not only that but it needs to be clean, not full of pieces of cob and stalks, or it will stop up your spin feeder, and that's a biotch to remedy. Ok, so that's good to know that a 55 gal drum holds less than 350 lbs. Think i'll just go the pallet route, hell of a lot easier to handle and usually clean.

The elevator I've used weighs the bulk corn and charges per pound. Average weight of drum is 325-340. It's been about 11 cents a lb.

It’s not hard to go buy 1/2 by 1/2 wire screen build a frame and clean the corn pouring it into the feeder.

I didn't say it was a great price, just letting people know what I came across. The co-op is the cheapest place I've found around here.

Stopped at Buc-cee's yesterday on the way home from taking the family down for lunch at the beach. First time I've been in there. They are selling 50 lb bags of corn for $5.99/bag for those who feel that they need that sort of thing to kill a deer.

Yea, all Walmart and academy has is 40lb bags. I wish I had a farmer close by that had it. The one that used to have corn has retired, he's in his 90's.

I didnt buy any the other day, nor did I inspect it closely, but their bags are kinda see through plastic, and I didnt notice any. Looked like good, clean corn.
