20g Buckshot vs Slug

20g Buckshot vs Slug - 11/17/18 12:32 AM

Well my girlfriend says she wants to come hunt deer and hogs with me this year. I'm cool with it but I refuse to by another rifle considering I'm building an AR already. Therefore she'll be using my .308 when we go together. That leaves me with my cheap Stevens 320 20 gauge. I'm torn between buying mostly slugs or #2 buck. I'm comfortable knowing all my shots will be close so which do y'all recommend ?

I’ve tried but I’m never gotten a good pattern with 20- ga. Buckshot.

Or a 450 Bushmaster upper. Same size bullet as a 20ga sabot slug, good bit faster and a hell of alot more accurate.

Slug only. A big hog can soak up a lot of buck shot without being hurt.

I've killed several deer with both. I'd get slugs.

Not necessarily the case. 20ga slug holes touching at 100 yards is pretty damn accurate.

Why not use the AR you are building?

Why not give her the 20 gauge. Then your problem is solved.

If your 320 has the 18.5" barrel with fixed cylinder choke, then you really should stick with slugs. Buckshot for even relatively close hunting ranges will need a full choke (or at the very least, modified) to throw a tight enough pattern to be effective.
