I'm seeing lots of dying red oaks all the sudden. Wondering if this hot dry just finished them off from the 2016 drought.

Actually yes. If it’s like what’s going on up here it’s a disease called hypoxion canker. Trees were weakened by the 2016 drought and it’s taken a couple years to manifest itself. Pretty serious in a couple places in northeast Bama

I've been mentioning that to the guys at work for a week. At first I wasn't sure but it's definitely dead trees I'm seeing. It's dry even with the rain we just had.

We've seen it and told it was the disease that BrentM mentioned getting to them.

That disease hit our red oaks something terrible in 1999.

I saved a red oak at my new home site and I noticed the other day, all the leaves were brown. I guess i'll get the dozer man to go ahead and take it down before we start the house. I wondered why it died. How can you tell if it was a disease that killed it?

We cleared land for our house about 5 years ago, red oaks all around our home site began to die about 2 years later. I was told that they are very sensitive to soil impaction and basically
any disturbances to the soil, plus also changes in canopy, etc all would effect the long term health of red oaks. I do not really know the science behind it, only know I was told this by several foresters tree trimmer guys that seem now to have been prophetic. I've probably had 10 red oaks die near my yard, glad I went ahead and took out all of them that might have fallen to the house.

I lost one last year that I’d had a ladder stand in for 18 years.
I didn’t cry but I thought about it. It was my stand to “run get in for just a few minutes”’ after work.
Shot a deer or 2 out of it and did some good thinking about life in that tree. I’ve moved my stand nearby but it’s not the same.
