There are lots of deer in that area, so that's not surprising.

Yep. And it's a great property to hunt this time of year. I've been a few.

I have a place on the south side of cty rd 2 between Dr Thrashers place and JBC's grandmothers house. That particular area seems to have the most aggressive rutting activity of any place I have ever hunted. Might ease over there in a little bit and sit til dark.

We used to lease that place on the corner of county rd 19 and county rd 2. I backed up to that Buchanan place off of Coon Hop Rd. That place was loaded with deer.

That use to be my grandfathers brothers place back before the high fence when it was a cattle farm. I spent a lot of time feeding cows and working on that place and the Thrashers other property across the road was my grandfathers place. Used to spend many hours driving tractors and working cows over there too. Used to be a ton of turkeys over there too back when it was all cow pastures, hayfields ,and no high fence.

I was burning some big debris piles just north of Coon Hop Road this afternoon. We manage the timber on the place with the big lake.
It has to be the property just to the north of Okfuski's father in law's place.
I sure wish that bridge would hold up a log truck. It would makes things a lot simpler for us getting wood out of there.

Re: Macon County - 01/04/18 12:41 AM

Small world. My grandfather leased that place from the early 70's until they cut it in 95 from the Coates. It was one tract then with the cabin on the left side of coon hop rd and the majority of the property on the right. My brother and I built a small dock on that little pond on the big side. Some of the prettiest hardwoods I've ever seen before it was cut. Right side was 50% pasture and pines on the front and all hardwoods on the back. Killed my first buck off that beaver swamp years ago and my first turkey in that front pasture. I bought a place 15 years ago between the Dudley land/McGregor and the Wilson's on the north end about 2 miles the way the crow flies. Love the area, but it's not what it used to be.

Do you still own your place? I cut through on 67 a lot heading to my little lease. It's a pretty ride through McGregor's.

It gets hotter in Ft Davis 10-15th on our place on CO. Rd 2; heats up in late Jan- Feb in Barbour Co. so that is how I split my time.

Re: Macon County - 01/05/18 08:01 AM

I was hunting that area yesterday afternoon, early afternoon I had two different bucks sticking with two different does, would not leave them. Later in the evening I had 4 bucks in the same field with 2 does and no one was paying any attention to each other at all. Looks like it's at least getting started around there.

Nothing happening here yet.....usually see peak activity somewhere around the 20th-25th.

Re: Macon County - 01/05/18 09:17 AM

I hunted in Armstrong growing up with my Grandfather. He had two leases that were about 500 acres a piece. One was paper company land, and it was some awesome hunting. Once he passed, about 4 years ago, we had to give it up. I would do anything to hunt that area again. I hunted there from 8 years old to 20 years old. I always loved grabbing a nice burger from the Hilltop grill, and then getting some nice steaks from the Pig in Union Springs. I look at google earth when im bored to just look back at the aerials of our old properties. Miss the hell out of it.

He had a trailer off of County road 2 for many years, right where you can turn onto 45. He was across from a man named Bubba Vail who used to raise quail. My greatest memories come from down there.

Yes that's it. Been hit hard on timber cutting. It's a timber management company. Family owned. I hope they are done for a few years. the clear cut on county red 2 west is about to grow into a great bedding area.

Yes Pete jr has it now and we have about 1700 leased. The Wilson have about 2000 of it leased. They leased everything that red oak had. The hunting has been very good since they took over that tract. There is another couple thousand that doesn’t really get hunted much. Pete sr kept it for his buddies to come hunt on. Where bouts Yal at

Just west of the Russell place. Mr. Pete was a super nice guy. Used to run in to him from time to time. Enjoyed talking to him about turkey hunting and duck hunting. Hated to hear of his passing last year. Do y'all lease the place on the corner of 67 and 45? Wyncreek leases his property closer to my place. I'm surprised they haven't bought it. Hogs have been bad lately.
