Body had me threw off a little at first but I noticed the saggy skin around the jawline. Gotta be old.

Rear end is jacked up in the air. Don’t know what that means. If he was in AL I’d guess 3, but since you said Texas I’ll guess 4.

Re: how old is this buck??? - 11/16/17 11:47 PM

At least 6. No sag in belly, but that could be diet. Legs are short. No pronounced long neck, a slight sway in back. Old deer.

Re: how old is this buck??? - 11/17/17 08:07 AM

Body looks like a 3 year old, maybe 4. I do see some features in his face that scream older deer. Texas deer have small bodies on them. Ok Fred, let the cat out of the bag.

47. He has a senior at State, freshman at the local community college, and an 11 year old "accident." He just recently bought a mid-life crisis in the form of a Harley, and considering taking night classes just so he can stay away from his wife.

Re: how old is this buck??? - 11/17/17 08:57 AM

All right gents. This is a live deer in the Texas Hill country. Age is NOT known. I got it off a Texas hunting forum and 90% of them said 3.5, so I posted it here for ya'll.

I think the deer is past prime, prolly a 7 er 8 year old. Legs are shorter looking which says 5-6 to me. Add badly sagging jowl skin which is NEVER found on young deer but shows on bucks when they reach 7-8 years old.

I think he is just one of those smallish body size bucks that are hard to age, but are usually way older than first glance will tell you.

Antlers are not supposed to play any role in aging.

Re: how old is this buck??? - 11/17/17 10:02 AM

All deer don't age the same. I've seen known-aged pen deer that people would estimate at 2-3 years old when they were 10+. Sometimes once they reach that age they're just like an 85 year old man, losing muscle mass, having protruding facial features, and sagging skin around the jaw line. You gotta look at more than sagging bellies and leg lengths when they get old. That deer is definitely old.

Re: how old is this buck??? - 11/17/17 10:28 AM

It's a trick. Troy photoshopped a colt's leg's on a deer to mess with us.

I'm no expert but I think aging Texas deer can be difficult. They just don't have the body mass to develop the sway back, sagging belly look of an old Midwest deer. We had an old 5 pt on camera this past year at our club that looked like a fat boar hog with antlers. He survived the season.

Lots of good info in this thread.

Regardless of where you are in the country deer age with the same features, whether they are 150 lbs or 350 lbs. I've seen some mighty respectable south TX deer. Not uncommon to see them at or over 200 lbs. they're a lot like our deer in most of AL on body mass. Individual differences in how deer age play a bigger part than does location or body mass. There are small puny looking deer and muscled up freaks in the same population, just like you see in people. I'm one of those small puny looking ones, so I can tell what they look like in a hurry. Lol.

Hard to judge from a picture these days...possibly inbred from all we know. I know someone that had pen deer years ago with a buck that had particularly short legs.

Well in our area with age comes mass so yes we can generally age via rack. Also with the differing guesses can we do much more then SWAG via body size.

6-7 year old. skin sagging around jaw, nose looks like it may have the roman hump (hard to tell from angle), he looks like he's been around the block a time or two and crossed the street as well. I'm sure when I read this thread B'ham Fred will tell us it's a yearling and that's his 1st set of horns but oh well.
