So, im familiar with shootin deer with the 223 and all, it aint exactly the the first caliber id snatch up for deet but i have one and its for my wife to use. She likes shootin the 223 as my 30-06 scares her some. She shoots it very well also. Any reccomendations on a good bullet for deer hunting. Otherwise ill just get some power points or hornadys.

I'm using the 62 grain Federal fusion. I'd rather use a corlokt but I wanted a heavier bullet, so I went with the Fusions.

I'd get some hornady reduced recoil loads for your 30-06 and let her try those

60 grain Nosler Partition. Shot several with them. My 223 doesn't shoot the Barnes very well.

For what its worth my son killed one this past Sunday with Federal Fusions 62 grain. The first shell did not fire (primer was struck). The next one did and the bullet did what it was supposed to do.

With that being said I have ordered a box of Barnes already.

62g Fusion or the Barnes TTSX will do the trick

Federal Fusion is good to go.

Hosscat, was it a light strike? from an AR?

I've heard good things about the Barnes.

I'd also second the custom lite line from Hornady. Did a great job on my little one's first on Sunday in the .243 flavor.

Winchester 64gr powerpoints work great too. Barnes is good, fusions are good.

It was in my bolt action varmint rifle, so no I would not consider it a light strike. As best I can remember I have never had a FTF in that gun before. Its only a few years old but I have shot it more than any of my other rifles in the past few years.

It does not "fit" my 6 yo, but its heavy so zero recoil and he immediately preferred the scope over the VX2 on my AR that I was trying to get him to shoot.

I'm not upset about it. It worked out fine in the end and everyone makes a mistake eventually. Like I said the next round did its job.

If it was the Ar platform most likely the BCG was not fully in battery. The trigger will pull and strike firing pin but will not strike primer. Just chambering a round in a ar platform will leave a strike on primer due to the floating firing pin. Its a good a idea to look and hit forward assist to insure weapon is in full battery. Jus seen it was bolt gun sorry.

My son has killed several with my 223 using the Barnes tsx 55gr. The tsx is the hollow point and is a nasty little bullet that does alot of internal damage.

I shot some 150gr Fusions in my 30-06 this weekend and was shocked at how mild the recoil was. It was noticeably less than my .308 shooting 165's. It was downright pleasant to shoot.
