Public land drama

Public land drama - 09/08/17 09:11 PM

I guess this is a what would yall do kind of question. I put up a trail cam 2 weeks ago on some public land close to the house. Not much access to this property. I use to hunt this property as a kid but havent been on it for about 15 years. I went to pull the cam yesterday, it was on a old salt lick that has been there as long as I can remember. When I get to the cam it was not on the tree like I left it. I went to unlock the lock and none of my keys would open it. So I make trip back to the house and got some bolt cutters. When I opened the cam it was off and all the pics were deleted. Best I can tell they cut the lock and looked at the pics and deleted them somehow. And then put another lock on it.
Most people think when you delete pics off a SD card that there gone. Well that isnt the case. A buddy of mine is sharp with this kind of stuff and he got back all the pics on the card. I went thru the pics and had pics of the SOB. I know him well. I called him and ask if he has came across any cams in the woods this year. Of course he said no, that he was disabled and wasnt able to get around in the mountain much any more. I keep my cool and didnt tell him I had the sd pics restored. Just trying to figure out what to do about it without going to jail. LOL.........

It's on public land. You're lucky it wasn't stolen. Sounds like you should move your camera. Or at least hide it better.

Hell yeah! And a salt lick that's been on public land as long as you can remember is also known by everyone else I don't care how hard you think it is to get to. Move the camera. Why the heck would he leave it and change the lock? He was just gonna start using your camera has his own?

Re: Public land drama - 09/09/17 07:54 AM

This will take some detective work and may not be possible or easy.
print picture of him from trail cam.
Address and stamp envelope to his disability case worker.
Take picture of picture half in and out of envelope with address and case worker name legible.
Take picture of envelope held just outside mail drop box opening.
Send pictures to him with invitation to stay out of your woods from now on.

You know they make the trip wire style paint bombs that you can rig those up around the cam. Put extra cams in the trees to catch all the action and share with us Please

Re: Public land drama - 09/09/17 08:58 AM

I like the idea of printing off a pic of him and mailing it to him with a not to the tune of "you are a lying sonofabitch. have a nice day." The disability case worker angle is pretty cool.

Print those pics and laminate them. Nail them to trees in the area of the game camera including one on the tree with the camera

Re: Public land drama - 09/09/17 10:15 AM

I'd post his photos everywhere with a title, trespasser, poacher, thief and vandal BEWARE in big letters over the photo.
If nothing else embarrass the jerk. When his buddies start telling him about the photos he will be ill.

Re: Public land drama - 09/09/17 11:43 AM

An "IED" in the box? LOL

Like this one?

This turned into a big legal mess. It wasn't on public land, but on private land the old man (in this vid) said he "always had access to cross" or use-hunt or whatever. The landowner disagreed, had asked-told him to not cross-use it, and then this happened. Legal stuff, courts and such.

Print out the photos of him from your SD card and go talk with him. He can't deny the images. Then ask him for the money for a new lock.

If you really wanted to do anything about it, you would've done it when you had him on the phone(at least told him you had him on camera). The next logical step is to bitch about it on the internet. Since that's been taken care of, just enjoy your Saturday. Lol

Been that way for a while. I knew a guy that was "disabled" who hunted everyday as long as something was in season. Pissed me off on my way to work or back from work and he was headed to the woods or showing off his kill. He is dead now so he doesn't piss me off anymore.

1. It was public land, so he wasn't trespassing.
2. He lied about messing with your camera, SD card, etc.
3. See #2.

I'd definitely let him know you know it was him. From there, not sure what else you can do that'll result in anything good coming from the whole situation.

Recovery software. It's basically free these days. Used to cost a thousand bucks or so. When images are deleted they still exist, they are allowed to be overwritten. Software
Is so good it can go back several generations to recover images.

Sandisk had a free recovery download at one time.

Im pretty sure you just hook an USB cable up to your camera and hook it to your computer. The pictures are on the hard drive of your camera as well as the card.

Just guessing, but I was told that before.

Id like to hear from him ( the OP) and see how he did it.

Depends on the software. How the drive is deleted/formatted etc...

Some agencies have some serious recovery software that can garner info from the Memory etc... Think why Hillary smashed there HDs with hammers.

I was a full-time pro photog, went digital when it became viable in the early 2000s. The first time I'd heard of recovery software a friend that owns a sports photog business had a corrupt micro drive. He paid $3000 for a german software to try and recover the drive. He got most of the images back. Recovery software has come a long way.

Had another friend that had a 1T drive fail, he paid a few hundred to have that drive recovered. He got things that were deleted years ago. He then for the heck of it ran the free software and recovered the same things.

It's easier than you think. I have few free recovery disk still laying around.

I have a friend that has access to the best software needed to recover data from any device. When he gave me the card back he had restored 5027 pics all the way back to the year 2012.

LOL..... Trust me I not mad and hunting isn't a competition to me. I just wanted to hear some of the ideas yall had at getting back at a dumbarse roaming the woods messing with other peoples property. It amazes me at the number of people that think this way. How would you feel if you came up to your truck parked in a public parking lot and a dude was going thru your tool box or bed of truck? When you asked what he was doing his response is "well its in a public parking lot"

retrieving data from an sd card that has been deleted:

several ways, cnet has a good set of instructions.

but there are many tools available for free for use.

Re: Public land drama - 09/18/17 06:14 PM

sorry mr. Clif for phrasing my comments as I did. What I meant that it would do you no good to report it. I hate someone that would steal from another but it happens every minute of the day in this new world. My friend who used to hunt in reserves was in the habit of placing 2 cameras one high in a tree to catch someone who would steal the other or steal your climber that was left.

Re: Public land drama - 09/24/17 11:01 PM

I know when i leave a cam on public hunting grounds that im taking a stupid chance on someone stealing or messing with it. When i park my vehicle i take the same chance. Thats why i dont leave anything valuable in my vehicle. Everytime i walk back to my truck i look around it while im praying that all the glass will still be intact and the rest ok. It sucks to worry but thats the price i have to pay to hunt that land. So far i have been really lucky. I have seen some guys stuck in mud holes. They come back with help and every window is knocked out. Its pathetic that some get enjoyment out of vandalism. I know not to get stuck and leave your truck around Ditto Landing in Huntsville. Over the years i have seen quite a few stuck in mud with windows knocked out. Especially the road west of Ditto that follows the river bank. Never leave your vehicle around there. Its terrible. Friend had a stand stolen out of his truck parked under the 231 bridge on morgan county side. We was gone for 30 minutes, broad daylight. $50 stand and broke $100 window. Cant park or leave anything these days without trouble. They had to put a gate up on Hobbs Island rd that was a rite of way to access tva land. Cause folks was making meth at the tva gate i guess. Screwed me out of a close hunting spot by my house. Now its a real pain to access that land. Ridiculous. But to the original topic id mail him pictures of him messin with cam like someone else said. And thank him for not stealing the cam. Or ask him where is the key to the new lock you gave me since he was afraid my original lock was not good enough!!!
