LFTT-Trump day - 01/20/17 07:21 AM
Going against what I believe and sitting in a shooting house one a long narrow plot between a real thick creek bottom and some thinned pines. Killed my 1st buck on this property on this date 4yrs ago. I come to this shooting house every year on this date but history hasn't repeated itself. Lol. Good luck today.

I'm here. It's hot. Was originally planning on sitting all day but I just don't think I'll make it. Hoping I get another day to hunt this season with some cooler temps...
On another note, maybe I'm crazy but I'm pretty sure I smell deer

Re: LFTT-Trump day - 01/20/17 08:26 AM
I love it when a plan comes together, almost. I never hunt this stand until Late season. It's tucked in real close to a bedding area. Perfect wind for it this morning so I slipped in extra early. I had just pulled my gun up I heard a loud long grunt to my right. Big un come in at 20 yards. I could see his horns good with nekkid eye, but I couldn't see his body good in the scope. Maybe a doe will drag him by later.

Demolished a big doe this morning on the way to work, was going to try to save the meat but her insides were spilt all over and it was just a nasty mess. Gave it to one of the Hispanics here at the quarry.

Keep your eyes peeled and pick apart the tiniest bits of cover upwind from you with binos. If he's there, he's probably bedded where you just can't quite see him.

Well, I tried! Got a call about some stuff I have to deal with at the church. I'll be back out tomorrow I think...
As I was walking out, I found another scrape and a rub on a tree the size of my leg. I know that doesn't always mean something...but it still makes me hopeful.

Re: LFTT-Trump day - 01/20/17 05:42 PM
Shot a decent buck at 11:00am
Story
I've had an awesome couple of days in the woods. Was hunting with a friend in Dallas County since Wednesday and the weather has been rather warm. Yesterday I saw 25 deer with the largest being a 3.5 year old 8 point. I watched him in a big plot last night for almost an hour. He made scrapes, grunted, chased does, lip curled, the whole 9 yards. Very pretty buck but just needed another year.
Fast forward to this morning I sat on a river crossing and had good movement up till 9. One small buck chased a couple does through the crossing at Mach 5. About 10:20 I decided to ease out (mile walk). I was taking my time hoping to shoot one more doe on the way out. (I was there in part to help shoot some does). About 400 yards from the truck I stop and glass the road for a few minutes, about the time I get Binos up I see this buck step into the road and stop for a second. I swapped to the rifle and couldn't get steady enough for the shot (250-300 yards). He eases into the woods and I drop everything but my rifle and take off running. I knew the direction he was headed, towards a big plot, and thought I could take another road around and maybe catch him. Well I ease towards the plot on a trail cut in some cedars so I had good cover. About 20 yards from the plot about a dozen hens take off so I immediately froze. After about a minute I scooted up another 10 yards on my knees to where I can see the back corner through some brush. Low and behold he's at the very back making a scrape. I put the gun on him again and can see that he's wider than his ears, good mass and height and no brow tine on that side.
This place has great bucks but they have a bunch with no brows. I decide he's a shooter and bang flop, he tries to crawl away so I hit him again. Only had to drag him about 40 yards. Had I watched this buck under normal circumstances I probably would have let him walk BUT I'm very grateful and happy with him. First buck for this year and he was at least 4.5 maybe even older. All in all a very memorable hunt.

Saw an 8pt I've already passed twice this year. Two yr old with an exceptional rack. Wanting to let him spread his genes a little before we kill him. He was running a doe today, rich on her heels. Maybe the plan is working. But he is pushing his luck. My boy hasn't killed one yet.

Hog down
Bbd on trump day. I got lucky and killed a heavy horned eight point here around the house. Him and a four point entered the field and I got so nervous waiting on him to turn broadside I shot and missed and the deer just stood there. I bolted another round, calmed down and fired again and drilled him right in the shoulder. The bucks are starting to get pumped up in my neck of the woods. Jono23 is gonna post the pics of him
