A wise wise man who goes by the handle Perchjerker once told me "Go fishing on the days when it's too warm to go to your stand."

I drove 103 miles up to my land today with the intent to hunt a few hours this afternoon, it was 79 degrees on my truck thermometer when I got there. I did a couple of small jobs and came back home.

Killed lots of good ones on hot December or January days

I would rather hint cold windy days but a 70° day in a tripod with short sleeve shirt on ain't all that bad

Killing mature deer in hot weather is definitely not the norm. Can it be done, sure, but not likely.

Killed my biggest 4 years ago morning of January 1st and almost didn't go due to staying out way too late for new years party. The low that morning was almost 60 but luckily 15 minutes after I sat down he stepped out and the hunt was over. Ended up with an 8 point I had on camera all year and scored almost 130 and weighing 175. By the time I got him loaded in the truck it was 75 and I was burning up.

Shot a 5 point last year on Dec.26 I think it was 76 degrees that day. The buck weighed right at 200 pounds. I will find the video and re-post....I saw two other bucks that day between 12 noon and 3:00 PM. I think they just change their routine during this weather. That is just my opinion, I have seen several deer in warm weather in Greene and Pickens county anyway.

My largest deer hasn't come from weather days like the last few we've had, but I have certainly killed quite a few mounters during the rut on days most people would stay home or go fishing. They are breeding does right now whether you are out there or not in our area. Warm weather doesn't change the rut timing. Does go into estrous the same time every year.

But when you're in post rut like some of us up here are right now you don't see shucks on days like this.

I've killed good deer on warm days during bow season and gun season. I've never seen a December lull.

Heck no. I wouldn't give you a dime for a day like this in your area.

Sad part is we all relied on Jan to kill some does after the rut but the powers to be thought we don't have any deer. So now we are kinda screwed with this warm spell on our only week to kill does left. They really need to redraw the line to stop at hwy 72. Our population is just fine north of it.

I feel the same way about western Winston County mad

We need to kill some more does, but I'm not doing it in the heart of the rut! I guess I'll try to kill them with a bow or crossbow in late season

I killed one of my bigger eight points on a hot foggy morning like these last few days have been. I shot him at 8:30 and the temp was already around 70.

This is correct. They'll get busy when they're supposed to whether it's 80 or 30.

It will slow down overall daytime movement.

Re: Anyone ever killed their biggest deer in these conditions? - 12/27/16 09:57 AM

I have killed several good deer on warm and especially warm and rainy days like today by either still hunting or doing 2-3 man drives, etc.

I have never killed a big one sitting in a tree stand on a 75 degree day in December or January. Earlier October/November you'd stand a better chance.

I also agree that when it is time for them to rut they will do it regardless of the weather. But you have to have deer chasing for that to be true.

I killed 188 lbs 8 pt yesterday at 2pm. Here in the southeast corner of the state next to the river the rut is wide open. I watched bucks chasing the last week and a half.

I was fortunate enough to kill a 142" last year on Dec. 23 when it was 75 degrees and the wind was blowing 15-20mph. caught him crusing the edge of a field at 6:50am. other fhan that I havent had success in these conditions. Im leaving the woods alone until it cools off. I hunted 5 days last week and saw deer, but it was much slower. id rather not walk 8/10 of a mile to my main spot and stink it up sweating right now.

It may, but if a doe's in heat and a buck's wanting some poonanny he's going to chase her whether it's 80 or 30.

When it's hot day after day and plenty of food does don't move in the daylight , so neither do the bucks. In 95 it was unseasonably hot right around new years for 7 to 10 days. Nobody was killing anything, nothing ,nota. This is peek breeding for our area. On Friday long about the 7th a front came through and it snowed that after noon. I killed a big 8 that morning. Over a 3 day period after that hot, humid weather broke there was more good bucks killed in those 3 days than the whole season. It was unbelievable, like someone opened the gate .

Deer still seem to be moving right now even with the warm temps. The trackers facebook psge has had numerous folks calling for dogs over the last few days and I've had several myself. I'm waiting on another one to call me back now. Sounds like the rut is really starting to kick off for a lot of guys. I think I would go try it even though the weather is crappy. Folks are still killin 'em.....or at least shooting at them and wounding 'em anyways. laugh

Went today and saw 5 bucks and 3 does. The bucks were all small and young but 2 had loving on their minds and were doing a little chasing.

Not going back this afternoon but will be out there again in the morning.

When I killed that 140 inch big nine last year it was 63 degrees at 5 am. Broad daylight...7-8 yr old buck half stepping looking for does.

If you could only get laid 2 weeks a year...you going to say "Nah..its too hot?"

Not killed, but I mentioned in another thread I saw my biggest buck of the season Monday, 11 am and 60 degrees. They're still moving. It would be different if this were October and 65-70. It isn't so get out there and put the time in. This is him

Re: Anyone ever killed their biggest deer in these conditions? - 12/29/16 01:54 PM

I figured it worth mentioning the 12/29 LFTT thread. 15-20 mph winds, with highs close to 60s and already three nice bucks posted in that thread. I'm sure there will be more posted for this evening. It just shows that deer are going to move when they want to move, regardless of the weather conditions.
