Re: Whats your longest main beams - 02/11/16 09:41 PM

Mine is 26 also, on a buck that scored 129 inches. He had good tine length, good mass, and a horrible spread at 11 inches.

Mine was 20" inside with 6" bases but tines were not anything to write home about. He scored 130"

23" from a few years ago with pictures.

I killed one that was noticeably better but he burnt up in our house along with all the pictures. So I guess it doesn't count.

Re: Whats your longest main beams - 02/12/16 08:48 PM

This buck is 26 on the right and 25 on the left, Id say hes the biggest main beam wise. He had mains that swept back...then forward and then UP...he scores at 146 7/8s but grosses 140 5/8. Its the buck I got this year:

I thought it would be one of these:

he scored right at 155...he is a main frame 10 with stickers and has 14 points total. His one main bean is 20 the other 22 inches.

This is a main frame 8 point with stickers...12 points total...20 inch one side 19 the other:

And the buck on the right here is the one I thought would be biggest. He scored at 169 5/8th...but his main beams are 22.250 and 23.125

the one one the left is 20.250 and 21.250. He is a main frame eight with one mule deer fork.

By the way..these are ALL Alabama bucks!
Gotta love North Alabama for great deer if you let em age.

Thanks man. Those deer are all from 2 spots that I hunt, one I own personally.

It took a while and a lot of hard work and trigger restraint to make it a good spot. 10 years ago you couldnt BUY a good buck there.

Put in the food, let it grow thick and the deer came and stayed.
Then it was just about letting them get to a good age.

Re: Whats your longest main beams - 02/13/16 08:17 PM

I put one in the BTR books from tn for a guy that had 29" beams. I actually measured them 3 times because I didn't believe it. He was only something like 17" inside and grossed 159. I swear that was the smallest looking 159 I ever saw.

Scored one from Madison co that had 28" beams but he was 21" inside. If that deer would have had good tine length he'd a pushed 180". I think his longest tine was 8". If I remember right he grossed 161"

You hit 23" that's pretty darn good anywhere.

Re: Whats your longest main beams - 02/14/16 03:02 PM

My first P&Y buck was a typical 10 point who grossed 160 P&Y and netted 156 6/8 P&Y. His right main beam was 26 4/8 and his left main beam was 26 3/8" according to his official P&Y score sheet. My largest P&Y whitetail grossed 167 7/8 and is the picture in my avatar. His main beams were measured at 24" right beam and 24 2/8" left beam. His G-2's and G-3's averaged over 10" each.

Here's the P&Y scoresheet on the 156 6/8 P&Y:

Re: Whats your longest main beams - 02/14/16 10:19 PM

I have looked for a picture this weekend but can't find it. When I was doing taxidermy in the early 90's I remounted a deer my wife's grandfather killed back in the mid 60's in north east MS. I don't know the county but it was killed near the little town of, Ecru, MS. According to the story the buck was eating up the garden of a black man and he asked Mr. Caldwell to come shoot it.

It is a 9 point that scored close to 150. The impressive part of that is the longest tine was only about 7" long, IIRC. The beams were both over 26 and the mass is incredible.

Nice bucks .

Antlers that do that look wicked in person. Buddy described this one I killed in GA as a "spooky lookin" deer, all his points did that and he had the weird crab claw that was the beam split on a plane, not another growing tine. The G2's go out and then in so hard that from the 1st pick it makes it appear that the main beam is growing out of the G2. Only 19" beams though.

As for my longest, the buck in my avatar had beams over 24" and they almost touched, he just wasn't that wide. He got all his score from the height of his tines.

I killed a 8 point in 2000 that had 26" and 25" beams. Since then I've killed two more with 24" beams. With that said, anything in AL with beams over 21" is an impressive deer. I score a lot of deer and look at a lot of harvest data. You don't see many with beams over 21-22".

Re: Whats your longest main beams - 02/23/16 04:10 PM

Matt, is there an average rack size or sort of a window of average? Like, 14-17 inches is average for main beam length, brow average is x-inches, Gee-beams are X-inches, etc.? Anything like that?

It varies by soil region. For mature bucks 4 + years of age, without pouring through thousands of individual entries, I'd say the statewide average on main beam length would hover between 18-21" depending on what area of the state you are in. Longer beams being more common in areas of higher soil fertility. Inside spread averages range between 13"-16". Number of points is going to hover around 8-9 points. We don't measure tine length as that is usually not an indicator that leads you to any useful information.

I'll say in northwest AL in the upper coastal plains or plateau region averages from the DMAP properties I work with are 14.5" for inside spread, 20.185" on main beams, and an average of 9.1 points, give or take a few 1/8ths.

Matt, to me inside spread would be the measurement that isn't useful, spread is nothing but air, air is everywhere.
Posted By: top cat

Re: Whats your longest main beams - 02/23/16 09:46 PM

Inside spread is indeed only air but does add to a score. But I have never had a deer scored. I do believe antler traits vary through out the state and all over for that matter. A wide buck looks good but a heavy rack looks good too. I do think mass tells more about age than spread. I've seen 3yo with 20"+ and 7yo with 12" inside. Any base over 5" says alot as does 20"+ mains.
Posted By: Mbrock

Re: Whats your longest main beams - 02/23/16 09:55 PM

Lets say we have two clean 5X5s taping 150" exactly . One is 16 " inside spread ( air) and the other is 24" inside spread ( air), which really has the bigger antlers?

Kinda like asking which weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of lead.

In most cases the smaller inside spread has more antler growth. Kinda easy if folks understand scoreing. But the lower scoreing buck may appear larger depicted in certin photos.

The 8 point I posted pics of has 5-4/8" and 5-2/8" H1 measurements.

Re: Whats your longest main beams - 02/24/16 04:01 PM

Not sure what the measurements are but this guy probably has some of the longer main beams on a deer that I've killed. I got him opening day of bow season that year. Shot him at about 4 steps from the base of my ladder stand with an evil crossbow.

He ranks right up there. So much so my wife (for the first time) has green lighted adding one instead of having to replace one. Thinking of a wall pedestal mount and putting him kinda up under the top center.
