Re: LFFT 11/28/15 - 11/28/15 05:59 AM

I'm taking youngest daughter behind the house to watch a pond between a cornfield and a cutover. I watched two basket racks shove each other around yesterday evening til dark.

Well they showed back up and she one across the pond. She had 3 bucks shoving each other around at the waters edge.

I am having to hunt vicariously through my wife this morning. She is back on the powerline where we have been seeing a lot of deer. The Covert sent a couple of pics last night that inspired her to head to the stand when I left for work this morning!!

Good Luck to everybody today!! smile

I sure hope you're wife gets the bottom buck this morning. I will be getting off work at 7 and I will hunt for an hour and then I will be headed home for a nap. Gonna try and hunt before work this afternoon. The woods should be empty of people and full of deer.
ROLL TIDE!!! And good luck to everyone hunting today.

Thanks!
Me too!! I saw him cross the powerline at about 275 yds Sunday morning right at daylight. He never stopped and offered any chance of a shot. Just steady walking. Maybe he will stop and look around this morning!

Dad-gummit!

She just had the big one do the same thing he did Sunday again.......crossed ROW at a fast walk and never stop. This ROW is a narrow strip on a small line that runs several miles back into the woods and feeds a camp house. It is only about 20 yds wide. So, they can get across pretty quick!

I'm just off of a standing corn field, watching it and a grown up sage field. There's a fresh scrape about 60 yds from me. Maybe he'll slip out of the thicket and come to this scrape this morning

Miserable hunt on Friday afternoon. Tagged out and drove 23 miles to the tract and got in the stand and just across the line they contiguous land owner was having a dang dove shoot. It seemed like they shot 1,000 or more shells. Only thing I saw was a BIG dang gobbler.

Re: LFFT 11/28/15 - 11/28/15 09:00 AM

Its been slow at the hunting club with this heat. Nobody is seeing much at all so I decided just to hang back at the house today and watch some football. I may be going out on a track though in a couple hours. A guy called earlier this morning saying he had just shot a good buck with his bow but he knows he hit it back close to the guts. He said if he didn't find good sign to follow then he's going to just back out and bring in a dog. We'll see what happens.

Yes, but will need to be in stand in woods and wind will have to be PERFECT!
She said another decent 8pt crossed in same place about 15 minutes after he did.

Re: LFFT 11/28/15 - 11/28/15 10:45 AM

I'm set up this morning on a ridge overlooking an inside corner. It was hell to get in here, but I did it right. Wind is in my face, didn't spook any deer, and this set is absolutely perfect (especially for my first time in this spot). The only thing missing is a buck walking through... WTH is wrong with these deer?!!? Don't they know I've got to be at home for the Iron Bowl??? grin

My set this morning.

Curious how many "good ones" have ground shrinkage when you find them?
I ask, thinking many of the shots in the woods, need to be quick once one identifies its a deer with horns, till the shot, or the deer is unable to be killed.

Excited today as my daughter asked to go hunting. Hot or not, tickled to spend time with her. Wind is right to go where I've watched two bucks in one field. Headed out at 1:00! Whoop Whoop!!!

Midday scouting on the 65 acres my neighbors gave me permission to hunt .. Buck sign everywhere, fresh rubs every 20 feet or so in this small draw, I'm at the beginning of an underground spring on higher ground leading into a bigger creek .. Really thick in here . I got a good feeling about this place . Decided to sit down in this draw for a while im real close to a bucks bedroom. Not going to come back in here for a couple weeks after this.

I'm still new to tracking so I don't have a lot of finds to go off of but ground shrinkage seems pretty common. Something else that seems pretty common is the perception of what the hunter thought happened is actually different than what really took place. I would have thought from talking to the hunter today that the deer I went and tracked would have surely been dead. However, after tracking it with Otis for awhile and then bringing in a more experienced dog.....we finally called it off after pushing the deer in a 2.5 mile circle. I did get a chance to meet some nice folks though and go on some of the prettiest deer hunting land I've probably ever seen. It was definitely the "good stuff". smile

Yes but what if your not fast enough or rush the shot from the time pressure and make a bad shot or miss or even if you never get the shot off you've still alerted him to your presence by parking the vehicle there for him to see.

I'd try something more subtle. Pee right in the middle of where he crosses. He may stop to check it out and even if he spooks he won't associate it with a human most likely so you can try again later. Let him know "man" is hanging around and he'll find another way or another time (nighttime) to get where he wants to go.

Re: LFFT 11/28/15 - 11/28/15 10:10 PM

My grandad taught me a trick years ago that I've used several times and had pretty good success with, especially with narrow shooting lanes and during bow season. Basically all you do is get some regular black sewing thread and basically make a trip wire across the path that the deer are traveling. You want the trip wire to be close to brisket height. The idea is that the deer will stop to figure out why they can't see what they're running into. I've killed 7-8 deer and I've probably let a dozen walk. They'll eventually just walk through it and break the thread but it's enough of a pause to get a good shot off.
