I can't teally age him from that pic, but if he is as young as I think, I would let him walk without doubt.

For the one saying don't shoot. Is that a no go because he may grow into something, or not worth wasting a tag on

The deer still has a lot of growth left in him.

I would pass, let him get some age on him. If you need the meat, then fire away if you dont have a good doe population

Re: Shoot or not to shoot? - 11/25/15 10:15 PM
Look at the body. If it looks like a doe with horns then don't. If it is a 200lb deer then of course. I don't know why when everyone sees a cow horn they assume from the get-go that it's a cull when the body ain't but 115 lbs.

That's my thought too. I'd never shoot a button buck on purpose and this seems about the same.

i think he has some more growing to do . in my hunting time i've only saw just two mature cow horn spikes dead or alive so the odds are good he'll be a lot better next year .by what i can tell the deer aint very old if he is two no way i'd shot him unless i wanted the meat .

Re: Shoot or not to shoot? - 11/26/15 02:36 AM
I would not shoot this year. Give him another year and see what happens then decide
That guy looks shady as shucks guys. He's only showing his s upper face and he's still holding on to his very thin hair.
Why is he hiding behind his phone case?
What is he hiding behind that phone case?
It looks like he chews his finger nails......why? What is he hiding?
I'd say at least beat him down if not shoot him.

C, both A&B.
I have never killed a buck and I certainly wouldn't want him to my first.

Here is another pic. Pay no attention to the image of the guy on the screen. He looks the way he does because he is married with 3 kids. Two of them are teenagers. Lol

Re: Shoot or not to shoot? - 11/26/15 11:50 AM
Those pictures confirm its a young deer. Shoot it if you like, but you're not helping anything, in terms of genetics, IMO

He's young but if you want to shoot him go ahead and don't worry about what everyone else thinks! Just please don't call him a cull deer after you shoot him. Just say I killed this buck because I wanted sausage

Why exactly are you asking? If the date on the camera is correct that deer has probably been dead for at least a few years. Then again, he could be an almost 10 year old cow horn spike by now that no one ever shot because he didn't "make the grade".
If it's just a general sort of question applied towards any similar type deer then it's still your choice whether or not you shoot such a deer. I imagine if no one ever shot him then his gene pool is firmly established already. Do you see others like him?

Re: Shoot or not to shoot? - 11/26/15 06:54 PM
Just to see what people's opinion was!
Date on Camera wasn't set. The pics were taken this deer season.
Never saw another cow horn of this size on this property.

If cowhorn spikes killed all the other bucks with tines, the entire species of whitetail deer would consist of nothing but cowhorn spikes. Logic'nshit.

Re: Shoot or not to shoot? - 11/28/15 06:04 AM
That's a personal question only the person shooting can answer.
We had a 2.5 year old spike one year. I saw him twice. He had 18" estimated beams. He was there until antler shedding.
He never had spikes again. Unless he died that summer. I figure he was one of the solid 3 year Olds the next year in there.

Re: Shoot or not to shoot? - 11/28/15 08:03 AM
I can't see his body in the pic. May be that he has better horn genetics than the (typical spike) and is a youngen. Kind of obvious to me killing him would ensure you the potential of him ever being a trophy is out. As for cowhorns never getting big racks you -kill- fellas may want to do a little research on that subject. I know you won't tho cause your a "can't cook horns" type.
