When are you planting this year

Posted By: muddyfeet

When are you planting this year - 09/01/15 03:55 PM

I usually plant at the end of September due to it being the driest month of the year. This year with all the rain we've had I'm thinking about getting everything in the ground around the middle of the month. Anyone else thinking the same thing? Out of curiosity when does everyone else plant.

I've heard others planting earlier this year as well. I'm thinking about mid sept will be the sweet spot. Not that a week or two really makes a detrimental difference.

Already bush hogged and sprayed. I planning on burning it off next Monday and planting that weekend.

We usually plant late Sep or whenever we get a rain around that. I'm wanting to hold off and plant late Oct this year in hopes of a better late crop and maybe them getting started goon on the plots around youth season.

Mid September for bow season. Never had a problem. Hit with ammonium nitrate in mid December and it'll stay green til the end of the season.

Oct 3-4 at the hunting club. My home property will be right around the same time but I've got the ability to time it a little better around the weather here. I'll plant any time after Sept 20 ish if the right weather comes in.

Down in deep SE AL, don't plant winter greens until at least the last 2 weeks of October. Plenty of peanuts/beans/acorns to keep them fed in Sept and Oct and if you plant your oats/wheat/rye too soon, it gets mature and stemmy (for lack of a better word) by January and much less palatable to the deer.

If you're talking about planting things like turnips or Austrian winter peas, then beginning of Sept would be better, they need some warm weather in order to get some good growth on them. Their growth slows down a lot more than oats/wheat/rye when the weather gets cold.

Hopefully we'll get rain. With my work schedule it would help a lot to be able to get everything in the ground a little early this year. I have to go through Eutaw tomorrow, so I'm going to stop off at WMS and pick up my seed. Guess I'll keep a check on Mother Nature after that

Of course this is in the 1% chance that they make after the legion of army worms get them. You turkey hunters don't know nothin bout this deer hunting. Don't ya'll know all serious deer hunters quit planting on labor day weekend at least 12-15 years ago. It just doesn't work anymore. I bet you're probably using plain brown bags and not the bags with big bucks on it. smile

Planted late October and early November last year, but this year I'm trying to move it up a good bit to get that early bow season draw of the food plots on those bachelor groups of bucks. Maybe middle to late September depending on rain patterns. Winter peas, BF Oats, and Triticale

Re: When are you planting this year - 09/03/15 09:57 PM

Planted 2 small plots today....about 1/4 acre a piece. They are in a 9 acre highway of thick nasty stuff. Split the fields even between 50lbs of austrian peas and 50lbs of a wheat, rye, clover mix. Also 50lbs of 13-13-13 with micro nutrients. Maybe this will work?
