7MM08 deer loads?

7MM08 deer loads? - 08/02/15 10:26 AM

I have a question regarding deer loads. My rifle is a Tikka T3 in 7MM08.
I currently have 3 varieties of Hornady ammo.
Which do you think would be best for deer assuming they all shot the same.

American whitetail 139gr Interlock soft point
Hornady Superformance 139gr GMX
Hornady Custom 139gr SST

The SST's will definitely get the job done, but don't expect a blood trail. My personal favorite for that caliber is 140 grain nosler partition by Federal.

lead tip and don't look back.. Get them American whitetail, you'll be fine,

All will do it. More important where the bullet goes than the bullet shot.

Stay away from the SST's.... I'd go 140 Accubond....it's what I shoot out of my Tikka 08....

The American Whitetails are also the cheapest which is good.
Ive heard good things about those Nosler Partitions

You might want to consider Barnes VorTx 120g TTSX; that's what my 7mm-08 likes; the deer and hogs not so much.

I shoot 140 grain Federal Fusions out of mine. They pattern really well and drop deer in their tracks. I'm a fan of shooting ammo that's easy to find.

The american whitetails seem to work and expand well.
The cheap part is a bonus. Ive stocked up on them for as low as $13 a box in 7mm-08.

Where did you find them for $13?

I've shot Every kind of 7mm-08 factory load probably except Barnes . That American whitetail is the old go to readily available, cheap , accurate and kills the piss out of deer, don't care for the sst at all

PSA ran a sale on them last year. 7mm08, 30-06,270,243, and 308 all for $13 a box and free shipping for $50 or more order. I stocked up well on it.

Ive seen it on sale also at other places for $15-17

Those prices put it right down there with the cheapest I have found in 7mm-08 which is PPU 140gr SP. Thats what I use for hogs/varmits and can find it for $12-15 a box.

Another vote for Federal Fusion in 140 gr. Can't remember the last time I had to track a deer using those.

I've got two boxes of American Whitetail I'll let go for $20/box if anyone wants them. Shelby/Chilton county area.

Re: 7MM08 deer loads? - 08/02/15 03:41 PM

I've killed a plenty with 139 SST Hornady Light Mags. They are mean but not made any more. I have several boxes that I'd sell, shooting a .308 now.

Re: 7MM08 deer loads? - 08/02/15 05:29 PM

Light magnums was my favorite by all means but like said above aren't made any more and the super performance don't fly in my gun

Re: 7MM08 deer loads? - 08/02/15 08:34 PM

Does anyone have experience with the GMX in the Superformance line?
Im thinking the SST will be used for shooting at the range.

Re: 7MM08 deer loads? - 08/02/15 08:52 PM

I'm shooting 140 grain SST in my 270 Win. It's done well on deer. I'm about to change over to 140 grain Partitons in my 270 Win and 115 grain Partitions in my 25-06.

Re: 7MM08 deer loads? - 08/02/15 09:59 PM

Accubonds in my 7mm-08 are super accurate out to 500ish. Just haven't tried past that. And they work well on deer.

Re: 7MM08 deer loads? - 08/02/15 10:13 PM

I really need to get my press out here from home so I can actually afford to try some loads out.

Paying $1-2 a round is just expensive.

Barnes ttsx 120 or 140. My 2nd choice if I couldnt shoot barnes would be a slingshot

Re: 7MM08 deer loads? - 08/03/15 12:46 PM

every deer ive shot with the american whitetail fully expanded and still penetrated, never tried the sst in 7mm 08 , but use them in my 7mm rem mag and have had a couple non expansion heart shots, so im thinking those dont do so hot if they dont contact some bone.

Re: 7MM08 deer loads? - 08/03/15 01:24 PM

I shot 3 this year with the 7mm-08 American Whitetails. All had good penetration and deer fell within sight but I picked a lot of fragments out of meat. I will use a bonded bullet this season, either Accubonds or Federal fusions.

Re: 7MM08 deer loads? - 08/06/15 10:56 AM

I shoot a 7-08 and gave away the Hornady SST's that I was shooting. As others have said, they just don't leave a blood trail.

I shoot good old Remington Core Lokt's now and have no complaints

Reloading or off the shelf? Been thinking about loading the 140 for this season.

If they werent fire formed it give u some. Ive shot both but the reloads shoot best. The federals shot great, the vortex not so much

This. I would personally choose the 120 though every time to get that velocity up and really open up that Barnes. There really isn't a close 2nd place to a Barnes bullet, especially if you shoot them light for caliber.

Been shooting 140gr Accubonds but they are do hard to get I'm swapping to the 120gr TTSXs.

Re: 7MM08 deer loads? - 08/09/15 08:49 AM

I am reloading TTSX for my sons 7-08 this year. Loading 120 grain. Hopefully I can report back with results.

He shot a spike last year with sst. There was no exit wound, jacket and core separated and we found it in the opposite shoulder. Luckily we stumbled on the deer on a trail in some thick stuff. Deer was dead, but we almost didn't find him. It was a good shot too.

Just my experience

Call barnes and talk to ty herring to get their suggested load recipe. I shoot the h414 and seat the bullet to recommeded distance off the lands (I dont remember that # off the top of my head). Clean your barrel good with a powder and copper solvent. I clean mine 1x a year. It will tighten up between the 3rd and 5th shot. Both of my guns are sub moa with them.

Re: 7MM08 deer loads? - 08/09/15 02:22 PM

Barnes TTSX 120 gr or Remington Core-Lokt 140 gr.
Two very different bullets, but I have the Core-Lokts zeroed at 100 yards and the Barnes at 200 yards without adjusting my scope in the slightest. In the stand I keep a 140 chambered, and if something appears on the horizon I can easily re-chamber a 120.

I will be trying these PPU rounds out this season. They shot well from my 7mm08 and for $16 a box, worth a go.

I havent tried them on deer yet but I can tell ya on hogs Ive shot with their 7mm-08 they leave a dang nice exit hole.

If ya watch online usually around February or March you can find it for under $13.
I stock up on it in 243 and 7mm-08 when the sales are on.
