Last night I learned that chipotle peppers are simply red jalapeņos that have been smoked and fully dehydrated. I've got 4 jalapeņo plants in my garden putting off more peppers than I can use. I think I'm going to try to make my own. Anybody ever done it? Got any tips?

Can't offer any advice, but that sounds great! I wish had plants that produced so much I didn't know what to do with em!

Don't like chipotle, but I've found that most things you can make for yourself rather than buy are WAY better than storebought! I've dried and flaked cayennes and sweet onions before, turned out great! Filet powder is nothing more than dried and ground sassafras leaves...pick young, tender leaves and dry them in a cool, dark place for a month or so, then grind them up with a mortar/pestle. The color and flavor, vs. storebought, is unreal. Homemade sauerkraut will make you never want to buy the canned stuff again. Orange peel and lemon peel, dehydrated then ground, adds fantastic flavor to almost anything you put it on.

If you've got that many peppers, give it a shot and let us know how it turns out!

Go for it. Pretty easy, from what I recall. Did it quite a few years ago. They were good. Much hotter than the store bought. The homemade adobo sauce was killer. Can't remember where I got the recipe.

I just pickle most of my jalapeņos now.

You can also make some pepper jelly. It's really cheap to make and a good way to use up peppers. Makes good Christmas gifts too.

not sure what the best way to handle them is but they shouldnt be on tv and gettn married and raisin kids
