Beginning to wonder if I'll ever get mine planted. frown Bout the time mine dries up enough to get some seed in the ground...another 1.5" rain will come along.

Same here. Only thing i have in ground are tomatoes. Used a shovel to break ground since my tiller died. Had planned on renting one this weekend, but looks like rain.

in that part of Florida you can grow a lot of stuff but I think you'll find that there is a different category of bugs to deal with.

Yep, apparently even worms (nematodes) in the ground that will eat the plants roots.

I've got probably 12-15 pineapple, them and papayas grow like weeds here.
I did plant a few rows of corn last year, just in the sand. They tassled out at about 3ft. tall and they had worms all in the very small ears they produced. No corn within MILES of here, where the heck did those things come from?
Should probably stock up on diatomaceous earth I guess.

Gman, if you let me know when it's ready or about to be ready I'll buy several dozen. Are you in Hartselle?

Hey Stob, welcome to Florida gardening. Check with your local landfill and see if they give away compost. I live in the Orlando area and get it by the truckload from the Orange County landfill. It grows good veggies. My experience with corn was the same as yours but I am successful with most everything else.Nematodes are the devil, as are cutworms, squash borers, pickle worms, powdery mildew and on and on in Florida.

I've had tomato plants, squash and peppers in the ground for two weeks. Finally planted silver queen corn, pink eye peas, okra and two kinds of watermelon yesterday. I wish we could get a good rain now. We didn't get a drop from the storms this weekend.

I'd gladly let yall have an inch or two...if it'd just jump over us here in NA this week! My garden and a lot of wheat, corn and cotton fields need 10 days of drying...

Thanks for the compost idea, I had 6 - 55 gallon drums of topsoil and cow manure imported from good ole Alabama. Crazy huh?
Went by the seed and feed store today and picked up some Brandywine and Beefsteak Maters, Jalapeno and Sweet Peppers.
Also planted about 30ft. of okra seed.
Supposed to have squash in on Thurs.
I tried to start some heirloom seeds a few months back but most didnt make, not much confidence in the seeds I planted in the ground Sat. so I'm hedging my bets with the plants.

Calling for 1-4" of water here this weekend. My garden spot is what i'd call on the low side...great for when it turns off dry. Question is, its May 2...and just dry enough to run the planter thru. With what they're calling for, do I dare risk another pound of seed and plant my corn, okra and beans/peas?

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.
