If you have pre-teen/teenagers, be aware of what they're looking at, searching for, listening to and watching on their devices.

The new Netflix show sensationalizes teen suicide. It's hit our community as of late and needs to be on your radar.

And how about smartphones? The world's filth at your 12 year old's finger tips.

Everyone thinks the rules don't apply to "their kids" though. I work with a lady whose 7 year old has a fully functional iPhone 6plus. No telling what that kid has/will look at.

Haven't seen the movie, don't care to do so. I'm going to check up on it, though, since our kids might see or hear about it. I think it's important to at least be aware of what's going on and discussed among pre-teens, teens and college-age youth to discuss it, if need be.

I've seen a couple of folks (on FB) say they were appalled at the language in the movie and said language wasn't fit for young viewers. THAT was their concern, the language, "dirty words" in a movie about teen suicide.

These are the kind of people who believe Andy and Opie are down at the soda shop sharing a bowl of vanilla with a splurge of two cherries. They need to wake the hell up and get a clue about reality.

It's a tv show, not a movie.

To the OP, it's not really sensationalizing suicide. The whole show is centered around a girl who commits suicide, but the takeaway message is that everyone she encountered could have done something to prevent her from committing suicide, such as being a little nicer, giving her a compliment, etc. I don't agree that it's an accurate show as suicide is a personal choice and a selfish act, but it's not really promoting the act of suicide, more of showing people a false reality that they can prevent someone from committing suicide by caring more.

Show, movie, series, whatever.

If your takeaway is "that has dirty words!" then you probably shouldn't be watching TV or movies or have an Interwebs connection.

I've only watched episode 1 after hearing how good it was. I enjoyed it. Anyone that believes it "sensationalizes" suicide doesn't quite get the message. It was more or less as described above. It's a show about teen suicide. It doesn't glorify it anymore than war movies glorify war.

While it has teenage characters, I think it's meant for adult viewership, probably not early teens. By the time a kid is 16 years old and able to legally drive and hold the lives of other people in their hands, I think they'd old enough to handle a topic like this.

The content is mature, so make your own call on that. If you have kids in high school, it's the same crap they're being exposed to there. The show is "the thing" right now, so they're hearing about it either way. It's tough subjects, but it's things everyone should be discussing with their teenagers in my opinion.

What SBS said!
I started watching it last night.(first 2 episodes)
Also, what Mr. Clem said.
This is based on teens and if folks don't think high school age kids don't talk like this, well they do.

I am sad to report that my 13 year old niece's best friend committed suicide yesterday. She had watched this movie and basically did the same thing and had been bullied. Unthinkable tragedy for the family. Young minds react to this type of content in unexpected ways.
A GoFundMe account has been organized in The Loving Memory of Anna Bright.

So sad beyond words.

Im going to watch it just because I'm a youth minister and have lots of students that will watch it.

What I've heard is that it is actually a decent show, but can romanticize suicide for younger viewers. We had a student at a previous church try to commit suicide yesterday after watching it. I'm not saying it is the shows fault, but I think it is still a good idea to pay attention to what your kids are watching.

Just finished it up. Pretty good. Like most things. To say it sensationalizes suicide is a pretty poor interpretation of it. Teen suicide is a real issue. To not discuss actually helps perpetuate it. It's crazy how folks interpret things. Does dare sensationalize drugs? No. Anyways it's worth a watch especially if you have kids in school. My son said it made him think about how and what he says to people. Without spoiling it, it covers alot more topics than just bullying.

My daughter turns 12 in a couple of weeks and a lot of her friends have watched the show. Its is definitely a hot topic for middle schoolers and parents need to be aware.

It sensationalizes, dramatizes and embellishes teen suicide. Ask your teens that have or are watching it. The way you interpret it and a young mind interprets may be different.

So sorry to hear wew. The young lady Trox posted about a few days ago in our community had also watched. I'd dare ask her family what they think of it.

This says a lots parents and failed policies of the NEA.
1. Parents should teach their kids how deal with bullies, like our parents did.
2. The NEA wants everyone to feel like a victim. "Report bullying" and "talk yo you peers" and "run % hide". Once you commit the first cowardly act in your young life, you never forget it. Once you commit to the cowardly lifestyle, you begin to die inside.

That's when suicide becomes one of your options.

The way you interpret it and a young mind interprets may be different. Man, this statement is so true. And it is different most of the time. I have first hand experience with this and my 18 year old "child". If you believe otherwise you need to pm me your number and I'll attempt to open your eyes.

He's talking about the same incident.https://www.gofundme.com/AnnaBright
That's the link for anyone who wants to donate. The family is gonna need all the help they can get moving forward.Right now they're staying at the Hampton Inn in Calera cause they don't wanna go back home.I personally don't believe her watching this show was the main reason she done what she done.I think it was alot of things at school and home that lead to her doing this.I DO think her watching the show had influence on her actually doing it.Like XVI said we interpret things very different than kids.A kid that has had a bit of a problem with kids at school and who is constantly sheltered and pushed to be perfect could watch something like that and feel like that's the best way out of a situation. They see a show like this and it's like it's revenge to the kids or parents that has always made fun of them or pushed them to be something they're not.Kids like Anna feel like they're different..She was an extremely smart kid which made her feel like she was different, some of the kids made fun of her for it.As much respect and love I have for the family they sheltered her which is usually the way it is when you grow up in a family that is so involved in Church and a father that is a pastor. She was pushed to be perfect and do not wrong, keep up that Godly image..She's a kid and I'm sure she done things her parents didn't approve of which were just normal kid things and that only added stress on top of the kids at school saying and doing things to her. It's like this..Her parents monitored everything she watched. If they didn't approve she didn't watch it.That's none of my business and they are free to raise their kids how they see fit but my problem with that is she's a kid,let her be a kid.She was a great kid that knew right from wrong so why shelter and monitor her so much. She knew what she should and should not watch or do so why monitor it.It came down to her being so scared to disappoint her parents I think the stress of it all came down on her and it was to much for her little mind to handle. It's just a terrible tragedy. My daughter was friends with Anna and about the same age. They have went to Church together the last few years so this has been hard on my daughter. She has cried more over this than she did when her grandma and grandpa died.I guess it's just hit her hard with them being a year apart in age and how everything happened. We had planned on going to the funeral but my daughter came to me last night and said she didn't think she could go.Not sure if we gonna go yet or not.

My wife and daughter watched it together. My daughter's conclusion is that the girl who killed herself made poor choices that led her to suicide.
My oldest son took one look at it and decided it was a chick-flick and went back to watching the girl beach volleyball game.
