Got a letter today saying someone had used my SS# and turned in a form in 2011. Said I owe 23 bucks and will incur interest if not paid off. Heck I already paid 1500.00 that year.

I would go by your closest IRS office with my paperwork handy and verify the letter was not sent out erroneously or by a scammer.

Get your credit score too. My son has had his identity stolen and had 3 years of tax returns against him.

It should not be that big a deal... Check and see if the other one was filed electronically or mailed.... If electronically then they can eliminate the other as long as you have your verification i.e. accountant code on the form if you used an accounting firm.... If you filed electronically take your verification from the IRS to the office. Should be able to straighten out pretty easily...

They know exactly where these things are filed and can eliminate the other as fraud just by verifying your address and location if you filed electronically.

Good luck. This happened to me years ago. I had every kind of documentation imaginable that I didn't owe it but they kept bugging me until I told them to go to hell I wasn't talking to them anymore. Got a letter a couple days later threatening to take my house and truck and everything over $118.

You would be surprised at how fast they forget things with one mailing of a letter from an attorney... Especially when it comes to small amounts...... Most of the crap they pull is scare tactics because of the power they have.... or had due to recent developments...... Most people don't fight them....

I had this happen when I was a student--identity stolen, and someone filed a fake electronic tax return using my info (saying i had 10 dependants, using UAB classmates info). They received a $8-9k return, and I had to clean up the mess. I checked my credit report at annualcreditreport.com, found the fraudulent address they used, then contacted the FTC. They assigned my case to a single agent who was very helpful. Took one year to get it cleaned up. Govt takes ID theft seriously.

If someone has your SS# id definitely pull your credit with all 3 of the major companies... its free to do and easy to find the info online.
I pulled mine 3 years ago and found some items on it that were not mine and called and had them removed.
Credit Karma is also a good place to sign up at .. its free and it will give you your credit score and continues to monitor it and will email you when it gets a "hard hit" when someone does a credit score for a large purchase.
