Why do you take to the woods my friend
To plough and plant and build and mend
In September heat while bugs still crawl
Long before the leaves of fall……?

I’ll try to explain……

It’s the gentle crunch of my boots as I make my way to the stand. The cold darkness that envelopes while settling in to my climber, high above the forest floor. The stillness that makes it so easy to hear the Creator in the silence. Patience that has been such a foreigner for months softly returns. A light shiver, then a violent one. All these things, so fiercely missed since last season, are at once present as I quietly nock an arrow.

A leaf rustles and anticipation grows. Soon the woods will come alive. A squirrel leaps down to begin its daily quest. A chickadee flutters. A tentative chirp, then a whole chorus from an avian hymn. Tree lines slowly emerge as dark silhouettes. Then light grows bolder as the sun begins cutting golden paths of warmth through the woods. I take a deep breath of the fresh autumn breeze……….and it puts my soul at ease.

I guess it’s because…….there’s nothing like opening day.
