I seen this mentioned in another thread, but could you actually get your clothes to smell like smoke and maybe leave a charred log in the barrel with your clothes to keep them smelling like that? Since the the smell of smoke is everywhere would smoke just be a neautral smell to deer?

It works. We do fire pit fires at the house and Ill bring my jacket out and let it hang in the smoke.

Smoking up before hunting is an old method of scent control

The main ingredient in smoke is carbon so it makes perfect sense.

My grandfather used to put my stuff behind the wood stove. It was nice and warm but did smell like smoke. I never got busted when I hunted their place.

I've used a bee smoker for the past 10 years or so. I've got buddies that are scent freaks and they think that I'm crazy, but my wife and kids have seen it work firsthand. With the swirling winds we get in AL, how are you supposed to "hunt the wind"? Yes, I try to hunt stands based on the day's dominant wind, but we all know how that goes... I "smoke up" when we get out of the truck and put our clothes on.

I keep a bag of dried leaves, pine straw, and small limbs in my truck's toolbox. Take a bundle of the mixture, light it up, and start blowing smoke all over everything. When I get done I'll scrape out a place to set the smoker on bare dirt and head off to the stand. Can't tell you how many times we've had deer downwind of us and never spook or blow. They will throw their nose up in the air and scent check when they smell us, but majority of the time go right back to what they were doing. The only scent control product I buy is Scent Killer to spray on our boots and whatever unscented soap and shampoo that's on sale.

The best cover scent is no scent. I strive to smell like nothing. Keep my clothes in a trunk with split pine and cedar chunks. Heart pine works even better. Use scent free laundry detergent, scent free body soap, never wear my hunting clothes until I'm at the woods ready to hunt. I wear a jogging suit or overalls (also washed in scent free soap) until the last minute. I get dressed only when Im ready to walk to the stand.
Never, never, never eat breakfast in your hunting clothes!
I shake my head every time I see a group of camo clad hunters in hardees at 5:00 am.

I'm confused. You said you want to smell like nothing, but then say you have chunks of cedar and pine in your clothes trunk. I inadvertently use smoke. We sit by a campfire when we're at the club so we get pretty smoked up. After about 3 days of this we wreak of wood smoke. Smoke kills bacteria. I do it because I love sitting around a campfire, not to hide my scent.

One afternoon I fished in the catfish pond using Catfish Charlie for bait and got it all over my hands.Dropped the fish off at the farm house and went straight to my favorite hunting spot. Had a 7 point walk up from down wind and dropped him at 20 yards. Have always wondered if the strong odor from Catfish Charlie had anything to do with it.

I should have been more clear. Point being, if you smell like the woods then you smell like nothing, unusual.
But I'm not knocking the smoke either. I've taken advantage of a campfire to smoke my clothing. I just don't go out and build a fire for that purpose.

I have a cousin who actually told his son, who was standing by the campfire, to get out of the smoke because the deer would smell him. Of course this is the same guy who thought there were 2 different colors of deer that had been transported in from different states. One was grey the other was red. My son couldn't convince him that deer shed their red summer and grey winter coats.
