7mm-08 ammo choice?

7mm-08 ammo choice? - 07/24/14 10:29 AM

Have read around on google and here regarding the different round configurations for the 7mm-08. The Hornady GMX and SST in 139gr. seem to be very popular. Of course it depends on what my particular rifle likes to shoot. Looking for some opinions on whatever y'all use and like as to this is a new round for me. I have read where some have had penetration and exit problems from certain bullets but its hit or miss. Hell I have had .308 fusions 150gr. not exit a bobcat once. Big dang cat but still. Which do y'all use for deer?

Mine likes 139 SST's. I shot a doe at the crease of the neck and shoulder. It exited at the front of her hip. That's enough penetration for me.

I killed a bunch with these in 7-08, before I started totin' a .308.

I'm gonna try a Barnes 120 grain TTSX this coming season in my 7-08 if I can get them to shoot well. A lot of people swear by the light for caliber Barnes bullets

I'm going to shoot 140 Accubonds if they shoot well. i don't see a problem with any bullet you choose as long as it is designed for deer sized game.

It's more of a " see what your gun likes" scenario.

Accuracy is not my #1 objective when selecting a hunting bullet. I like the barnes and fusions in 120gr or 140gr.

The last batch of sst I bought shot like chit!.I was very disappointed cause I'll switch from them to federal premium nosler balistic tip with no scope adjustment..So now it's just federal premium for me..

I've shot those as well..I used nosler custom and got good results.wasn't but 1/4" difference between them and my federal premium..

That's fine but it doesn't take a premium 140grn 7mm bullet to kill a deer. Nothing wrong with premium bullets though if you like them and the gun shoots them well. I wouldn't take a 3" group Barnes thoug over a 3/4" cup and core bullet.

I use the 140 grain Federal Premium Nosler Partition but have used the 140 Accubonds too . Both were interchangable in my Savage.

I shot the Partitions when I had one. Still have several boxes for my son when he steps up from the managed recoil.

I shot some Federal Premium Ballistic Tips as well when I first got mine. Very accurate, just didn't like the ballistic tip.

7-08 doesn't require a premium bullet. I've used 139 gr Hornady Interlocks, SSTs and 140 gr Sierras in my son's rifle. All were wicked on whitetails if he did his part. I'm now doing a reduced load using H4895, 120 gr Nosler BTs at about 2450 for my youngest son's rifle.

I want my 7mm-08 bullet to stay together but I don't want a bullet that's too hard. I lost a buck with a 270 WSM Winchester XP3 bullet. I think it punched through without expanding.

Handloaded 139 gr Hornady interlocks for deer. But I shoot a lot of the PPU 139gr SP for hogs. Bout $16 a box and they expand nicely.

Federal Nosler Partion 140 grain , My steyr loves them , have not had a deer run more than 20 yards after being shot with one.
