Custom gun ideas - 01/12/11 09:21 PM
I've got a Remington 700 LA just sitting in the gun cabinet that I never hunt with been getting the custom gun bug. So what could I turn that long action into? I'm a believer that bigger is better. Thinking something with a heavy barrel

Make yourself a switch-barrel gun. You can have as many calibers you want if they all have the same bolt face size.
You could have a 6BR, .308, 243, .270, etc, & etc. with as many barrels as you can afford.

No, no, no. You guys aren't thinking right. I'm thinking like blow a deer in half with one shot. Remember I'm obviously a bad hunter so I over compensate by using a much larger caliber than I need

Anyone can be a bad hunter, that's how the word "vegetarian" came about.
Magnum shooters are not always bad hunters, just over achievers.
BTW, my favorite hunting pistol is my S&W .500 Magnum, when I can afford to load it.

It's not a large caliber as you specified...but I've always admired a flat shooting .240 Weatherby magnum with a bull barrel.
Kinda like this one..built on a 700 action. Check this one out:

i had a 270 turned into a 35 whelen and love it. you can get an adams and bennett barrel from midway usa for about 80 bucks and have a gunsmith chamber it. or you could go with a 280 ack improved. that's my next project for a long action.

WOW. And
ONLY 29-lbs...
Yeah..I'd have to drop some wight on that baby. Geez.. lol A stock gun would be better than carrying around that amount of weight. But there again...the weight would be okay from the truck to a bench during competition shooting, I guess. lol
I almost bought a stock synthetic .240 WM a few years back. I think it was $590. Ammo is expensive. I wanted a bean field deer rifle really bad. (600-plus yard shots)

My next build will be a 6mm-284 or a 6XC on a Surgeon action.

Dingo,
With the 700LA you can do anything that you want. The only restriction is going to be magazine length! I would recommend 3 big .30s. .300 WBY throated short, .300 WM or a .300 WSM throated to put a Berger 210 VDLs Bearing Surface/Boat Tail junction at the NK/Shoulder junction of the case. So you could use the extra magazine length and case capacity. The .300 WSM with the correct throat and a 28” barrel will run the 210s right about 2900 fps. Which is more than enough medicine to take out Whitetail at 1,000.
Just sale the original bolt minus the firing mechanism for $125.00 and buy yourself a PT&G Bolt with the Magnum bolt face.
