Silencer issues - 04/22/24 02:07 AM

Put a silencer omega 300 on my bear creek arms .300bo. I was using stealth 200gr subs. There was no consistency with the loudness of the shot. Either it was completely quiet or it was like the can didn’t do anything for every other shot. Is this an ammo issue? A silencer issue? A gun issue?

I’ve never heard of that in my life.

I would lean towards it being an ammo issue.

Have access to a chronometer?

Sounds like you're getting some rounds going supersonic. If you can chronograph the rounds you can see if the loud rounds are going super. It can be a problem, especially with 16 inch or longer barrels.

This, I bet the ammo just isn’t loaded consistently.

Inconsistent loads are most likely. However, there’s a funny condition often referred to as “first round pop” that can happen with both subs and supers where the first shot through the can is noticeably louder. If the shots are spaced far enough in time you may notice that repeating.

It wouldn’t surprise me that this may be contributing as the gun needs an adjustable gas block to shoot the subs with it not loading a new shell everytime. It absolutely wouldn’t surprise me about the ammo as well as I got them as a cheap sub

I don’t…but I may take it and the gun up to the local indoor range and they may have one

^^^ChronoGRAPH.

First round pop is mostly associated with rim fire cans and gas burning off in first shot. You can test by giving yours a shot of spray duster (dust off, canned air) into your suppressor before the first shot of a string. If you’re getting this ‘loud’ shot in the middle of quiet shots, then it’s ammo or a loose baffle or other suppressor issue. It’s also possible you’re just getting more port pop at your face on occasion, and it just seems louder to the shooter.

i think it (300 Omega)also has a brake on the end of the suppressor.

just throwing this out there. Perceived volume is a thing. Because some people have a certain amount of hearing loss, people hear different, depending on the sound range.

I think Op's problem is probably ammo related. That would also be the easiest and cheapest to test.

Thanks for the help! Will try diff ammo and report back. The sounds were verified by other people listening and watching as well

Would definitely try some different ammo first. Several years back i had video of some 357 mag ammo that got hotter errytime you pulled the trigger and the last one was like Wow 😳 Was gonna send that to the company but the computer froze up and i lost it on my phone, but maybe one day I'll get the computer fixed lol. Well after a quick search it looks like they closed the doors, why am i not surprised 😆

I just started shooting 300 BO subsonic through a bolt action rifle. I do get the first round pop and occasionally it sounds like a round will be supersonic. I mostly notice the first shot being louder.

If you haven’t done this, have someone shoot subsonic through the can while you stand to the side about 30-40 ft. It gives you a completely different perspective on the sound.
