Best Spurs?

x2 - I've been chasing the elusive 1.5" for a number of years now

Never killed a turkey, but OH HOW I WANT to respond to this!

The first longbeard I killed by myself had a 1 5/16" on one leg and 1 3/8" on he other. Been mostly downhill ever since on the spur front.

I found this one almost dead and finished him off with an ugly glance.....damn I was fat.

1 1/4 killed several rite at it but I can't get over that mark.

1 3/8 is my best!

I called the big Eastern bird up and tried my best to get my buddy to shoot it, but he couldn't get turned. I shot it as it finally walked off.....

I killed a 1 1/2" and 1 7/16" at our camp in Dallas county 2 years ago about a 1/4 mile apart within a week. Biggest Rio was 1 3/8"

1 1/4th I believe .... Mountian birds usually have them rounded off at an inch.

1 7/16" is the best I've ever killed and that was last year. Been trying for 20 years to kill a turkey with 1.5" spurs.

I hate to tell you Jughead but you have a long way to go down before you go up in turkey hunting. You've killed bigger birds in the few years that you've been hunting than me and 98% of all turkey hunters will ever kill. Pretty impressive for a sneaky mini van hunter

I know pal. I'm tickled to death with a 3/4" spurred 2 year old though. Any one of them that will act right tickles the chit out of me. Heck, a jake that acts like a man is subject to get dealt with.

Where does that multi beard rank in the state rankings? He's got to be top 5

It'll get better man. Make sure you aren't doing the same things over and over and making the same mistakes. It'll click.

My biggest are 1 3/8. My dad and I hadn't been hunting turkeys to long. We walked out on a road just after daylight and made a few calls. Hadn't heard anything and were standing there trying to decide what to do. We look up and this dang turkey comes running around the bend about 100 from us. All we could do was stand and watch him lock up the brakes and pitch out. Knew where he went so we eased out to the gas line he landed on. Sat and waited him out for an hour or so and got up to leave and the bastard pitched up off the ground not 20 yards behind us! It didn't work out well for him.

Nah, I know. My biggest problem was time, or lack thereof. In those 4 years, I only hunted a total of 6 weekends. I am looking to change that this year. I hope to hunt every single weekend of the season, and maybe a weekday or three.

Killed one with 1 1/4" and another with 1 5/16". Tickled with them both.

I killed one on Cheaha Mountain (Tdega Natl Forest) in Spring of 1992 with 1-1/2 spurs. Killed one on the same ridge in the Fall of that same year with 1-3/8 spurs. That one weighed 23lbs (digital fishing scales) and had 11-1/2" paintbrush. Got him mounted. Don't guess I've ever killed another one over about 1-1/4. Seems like every bird I kill is 1-1/8 (always call them 3yr olds). I am dear friends with an older man from Talladega who has two birds: One with 2" spurs and another with 2-1/4" spurs.....both from Cheaha Mountain. If possible, I will try to get pics of that 2.25 bird...it's mounted in his cabin. I've never seen anything like it. I'd call bullcrap on that bird, except I saw it dead in the back of his truck. Nothing else was overly big about that turkey.

1 inch. Jackson county birds is all I've ever hunted.

1&9/16" is my best overall. My best season was 2011 when four of my five birds had 1&1/4" spurs or better. Seams like every bird we killed that year was a four year old bird or older.

My largest was 1 5/8. I have been very fortunate and have been able to kill 8 birds with inch and a half hooks or better.

1.5" is my personal best. Approximately three years later, I called in another bird for my best friend that sported 1 3/4". Both birds were killed not more than 100 yards apart south of Cairo, Ga.

I saw this set in person!!! That was a STUD gobbler an ole BC was like he had just killed another 2 year old. He is a damn stone cold gobbler killer!!

Stony I sure would have thought that bird was bigger when I saw the hooks.

Don't get me wrong. 1.5s are great bit I thought they was bigger.

several with 1 1/4". Not saying I've killing a ton of birds, but enough that I should have killed at least one or two in the 1 3/8" range. Birds in Jackson Co. just don't keep spurs like in other areas.

For me it was the second gobbler I ever called in on a solo hunt. 1-9/16 on one side and 1-5/8 on the other. I hope to get another like this someday.

We need to selectively breed these monster spurred turkeys. I can see it now:

Double spurs and double beards

I ain't never killed one with more than 1/2" spurs? Where are y'all finding these super hooks?

Well I cleaned out the ol freezer today. I found three nice sets in amongst the rest. One really nice set that are blonde with black tips that are pushing 1.5. There were a couple other nice sets as well. It was about time I cleaned up some spurs.

Used to have a road island red that would put all those birds to shame, we cut them once they got to be too long them things had to be 3 inches when we got him
