My first year of turkey hunting, I hunted a pet turkey for about 2 hours before I got to looking at the maps and realizing it was on a farm. Drove over there later that day and saw the pet turkey. Lol

Re: LFTW 4/13 - 04/13/24 11:56 AM

Heard one at 1.3 miles away clear as day from a good ridge. Got over here and he gobbled a few more times since flying down but I think he’s got ladies.

Re: LFTW 4/13 - 04/13/24 12:16 PM

I’ve heard exactly 1 single gobble about 610. It’s the only gobble I’ve heard all year on a property that had 2 mature gobblers and several jakes at the end of last year. The little county road that runs parallel to this place about 3/4 of a mile away has sounded like I-65 since around 6 and for the last half hour, the log trucks sound like they’re having a parade and seeing who has the loudest Jake brake. 😡

Son of a ……well I got a glimpse and he was with several hens. I couldn’t compete but at least I didn’t spook him so maybe this afternoon, time to go find another one

Re: LFTW 4/13 - 04/13/24 01:09 PM

He spoke at 5:55. Gobbled I guess 15 times until 6:30. He was roosted above me but only about 80 yards and I was Skeered to try and move and get on the same ridge him being that close. Pitched down and came down on my level to my right.....figured he would hit the woods road I was sitting above. Nope.....crossed the little Branch and went to the opposite ridge. Gobbled probably 10 times from 6:30 to 7:15 then he was done. I killed one right about where he was roosted 3 years ago. So....I'm gonna try and be sitting in his living room about 5:30 tomorrow morning.....hoping he decides to roost on that same ridge.

Finally heard one gobble on the roost yesterday evening. Went and set up on him this morning. Jake

Hoping the birds are loud tomorrow. I get to hunt tomorrow thankfully. This whole job thing is overrated.

Re: LFTW 4/13 - 04/13/24 02:22 PM

Right on schedule here. Didn’t hear a peep until 8 and then I heard 5. Nothing like a nice mountainous hike to have him shut up when you get back in ear shot of him. Man this is a fun game..

Re: LFTW 4/13 - 04/13/24 05:03 PM

Thigpen day 2 for us. Put in 9.5 miles of walking yesterday and didn’t find a track, scratching, or a feather. Told dad we’d try it this morning and if we don’t hear one we’ll head home. First listening spot was dead quiet other than a shot very near the property line (dunno how they got on one that early that wasn’t gobbling at all). Tried two more spots and finally heard a gobble way off, worked our way to him across about 600yds and by the time we got over there they (two) were gobbling fairly well. They were up on a big high finger ridge and we were in the bottom, I figured our best bet would be to circle the next finger over and come up to the top of it so we’d be on their level so that’s what we did. Got set up and called and they went quiet. Instead of walking the top of the draw level with us/them and coming to us these jokers came down about an 80’ tall (and very steep) hillside, crossed the draw, and back up a steep hillside to end up hammering behind us at probably 40yds. Right after the gobble came a putt and I never even got to lay eyes on them. I don’t guess I’m gonna get to kill a turkey this year…..

Re: LFTW 4/13 - 04/13/24 05:19 PM

#2 on the ground for me. I killed my first ever bird back on the 28th and now my second bird all-time today I killed this one in the same spot that I shot and missed one last year. To make things better on this redemption tale, I struck him up and got him close with my dad's old Lynch Fool Proof and use a mouth call to seal the deal. He came in strutting and I shot him at 30 yards. I got the call from my dad last night and immediately noticed what everyone was talking about with those old box calls.

Re: LFTW 4/13 - 04/13/24 05:25 PM

I watched one strut and come towards me for 45 minutes this morning. He got about 50 yards from me and I was waiting on him to get to 40 before I shot. This bastard came running in and ruined it for me.

First afternoon in public in Tennessee for me today, wish they’d let us hunt til dark in Alabama. Haven’t heard a gobble since 6:30 this morning but maybe one will come in silent. Light calling every 20 minutes and keep waiting. Winds starting to pick up

10 on 7000 acres and from the reports I got, not one gobble heard. Allegedly. 😉

I don’t know about y’all but the birds I’ve been working have been super henned up this year. I’ve gotten several pictures of gobblers sticking with their hens all hours of the day and evening. I keep thinking at some point they will break away but it hasn’t happened for me yet. I haven’t found one lonely and looking yet.

I’ve seen around my place with hens all day long, and then I’ve seen groups of gobblers still together some days…

Was able to get him fired up enough to pinpoint his exact location. Got my son set up on him at about 100 yards. I backed down the hill about 60 yards and got his hen fired up enough to come investigate. They got close, but my son said he didn’t have a clear shot. I trust his judgement. The dang thing pitched back up into a tree at 7:45 and strutted, gobbled, spit n drummed, and put on a heck of a display from 65’ above us in a 90’ pine tree. Never seen one do that before. His hen flew the creek and when she did, he dropped back down with her and wandered off gobbling his head off. Bet he gobbled between 150-200 times with a hen within 10-20 yards of him the entire time.

Once they hit the ground the first time, they fair game in my book!! I’ve seen a bird do that on a ridge. He would go from one end to the other gobbling and strutting on a limb… never did get to kill that bird

Seen it a time or two, figured those birds live on pine beetles as much time they spend on the limb.
