I’m here. Bumped some deer coming in and they blew for a bit. Looks like a pretty morning. They should crank up here in 10 minutes or so. Moon setting in the SW sky looks good! Not sure how it’s gonna play out but at least I’m in the woods! Good luck and be safe!

Re: LFTW - 3/29/24 - 03/29/24 03:04 PM

Blessed w an awesome hunt this morning! 3rd bird or stud that showed up on the day i shot was back in spot he was in few days ago and he had ran other bird off this time - was by himself. He was in the neighbors beautiful hardwoods and i was able to call him to my crappie spot 😀. Blessed to hav this spot - but it mostly pine thickets w fields - a deer lease. Most of my set ups are hard/thick - not turkey woods. We set up on old logging ramp (one of the few open areas) - thick all around it. Worked him for a good while going silent a lot - i gobbled few times at him late - he did not like that - cut me off. Shut up on him to make him hunt me - he skirted my son at 35-40 yards clucking (gob did not see hen - he new something up) - son said he did not hav clean shot. He gobbled again later - finally shut up when we circled on him - could hav seen us.
I can call to fields and open roads - most of rest of lease is thick - then on those areas that are open - they gonna expect to see hen standing there. Set up nightmares - i like to make em hunt me - but not in a pine thicket and u cant in a road r field cause it too open

Blessed w great hunt - he came in gun range - just not out in open - great hunt. Boy wants to go back - will gladly take him tomorrow

Gone at 6:40!!! Set up tight on one I messed with wenesday he goobled great had a bird pitch down in range thought it was him it wasn’t. The first bird stood around never strutted gobbled nothing. Bird on limb hits ground gobbling going away first birds turns headed towards it and I clucked once and let him have it. I ran grab my bird went back to tree enjoying the morning and they gobbling turkey gets hot and headed my way I slipped on out. Maybe in the morning or Sunday I get the ole lady on it

Re: LFTW - 3/29/24 - 03/29/24 03:25 PM

First one of the season dead at 7am! This was one of the mornings you dream about during the winter. This turkey walked straight to me from about 200 yards off the roost. I soft yelped at him and he immediately gobbled. I paced back and forth calling a little bit and another turkey answered me from the opposite direction. I decided to hedge my bets, and not try to get tight on either bird. I found a tree off the field edge and sat down so I could swing either way if necessary. After about 10 minutes I called again and heard a turkey walking and then spit and drum at my 8 o’clock position. This was the first turkey that answered me but I didn’t anticipate him coming that far left. I twist myself around to shoot that direction. He spit and drummed a few more times in the pines and I can hear him getting closer and closer to me but I can’t see him yet. He’s a little above me in elevation and I see him step out onto the woods road. He’s at 20 yards but it’s too thick to shoot. He spit and drummed 3 more times and worked to within 15 steps. Finally I had an opening. I was able to lean to my right and get a clear shot at his head when was in half strut. WHAT A MORNING! I thank the Lord for His blessings!

Re: LFTW - 3/29/24 - 03/29/24 04:27 PM

Started gobblin at 5:56 and by 6:20 two were standing at 80yds but wouldnt come any closer. They eased on and 10min later there were two more draggin up behind them and in same spot but too far. Move across the county road on them because they were heading that way and at 7:15 had 2 at what I thought was 55yds and they walked off toward a real hen. After they walked off I stepped it off at 38yds and 45yds. They were slightly up hill from me and I guess my depth perception was just off. Got on another about 7:30 and he was 200yds across the line. He'd gobble but wouldnt move. Good Lord willing I'll try it again tomorrow.

Re: LFTW - 3/29/24 - 03/29/24 04:44 PM

Good morning, came close. Had a gobbler in a pasture run a hen and two jakes in on me to about 50 yds but no shots. He then went back to the field and hung out there until I backed out. Heard a couple different birds early but they were way off

Hoping I have enough brownie points to slip out tomorrow

Dead at 8:30. Best gobbling morning in a very long time. Got in tight on a few birds early but couldn’t seal the deal. They headed off away from me and I decided to make a loop and get in front of them.

There had been a few other birds gobbling a long ways off and About 30 seconds after I started my loop I heard this bird gobble and he had covered a lot of ground since his last gobble. I decided to cut the distance on him and a few minutes later he dang near ran me over.

21.4 lbs, 10 inch beard, 1” spurs

Didn’t hear a peep in Jefferson County this morning…I did find strut marks on the creek bank for about 50’ where a gobbler recently travelled with a hen. He didn’t want to talk today, though…I’m headed to our Winston County farm this afternoon to take my 6 year old son on the youth hunt tomorrow

Re: LFTW - 3/29/24 - 03/29/24 10:13 PM

Got on 2 that burned it up but were across the line about 150 yards. Had to leave em gobbling to go to work and was still 30min late. More time and I prob woulda killed one of them. They killed 3 at my club this week but I came down here hoping to go back to area I hunted Monday. It was taken and evidently they killed a bird in there Wednesday and been camped out there since. I picked another spot so maybe one will be in that 300 acre block.

Congrats to the killers!

My 8 yr old grandson killed a jake this afternoon. Not only was it his first turkey, but it was his first turkey hunt. He got a 410 for Christmas, his dad called the turkey, and he made a good shot on him.
