Mossberg SA-20 Turkey

Mossberg SA-20 Turkey - 03/02/24 08:26 PM

well, not sure how it happened, I must have temporarily blacked out while at my local gun shop and ordered an SA-20 turkey model. Guess it is reverse to ask for feedback AFTER I already ordered it, but oh well. I played with one last year, but they didn't have one in stock for me to play with today.

Anyone have this gun? What about the ghost ring sight that comes on it, worth a dern? Got rid of my 940 with the red dot b/c I didn't care for that style red dot on a shotgun too much...but I may end up putting a regular sized red dot on it since it comes with the rail already. But chances are this season probably will just use the ghost ring if it's decent enough. I'm just a lowly factory ammo shooter, will be shooting Federal TSS #9 1.5oz mostly. I typically would just shoot it with the factory choke but not opposed to getting a different one.

So - any thoughts or recommendations? I'm not some maniacal turkey hunter like most of you guys grin, I usually just grab my gun, throw some shells in and hope I stumble across a dumb gobbler. I'm sure out of the box it will be good enough for that, but interested if others have any knowledge to share.

Well guess I will give the review of it for us but who knows when it will actually get a chance to kill one! Until a couple of years ago I’ve just always used my 835 ulti mag. Done the job if I did. Of course I’m now going down the rabbit hole of chokes and red dots/mounts 😂

I’ve got one, had it since 2018 never had a problem with it at all, i put a venom on it and a trulock 565 choke, i think you will really like it.

I shot one for a year or so after the first one I had broke the bolt using some high pressure MOA tss loads. It never gave me any trouble after Mossberg replaced the bolt. My brother has shot one for years and hasn’t had any trouble out of his. It’s a decent turkey gun.

I have one in the Mossy Oak Turkey Thug edition I bought from a friend. I shoot XRs through it and it performs past my expectations. I had one instance on a miss where it basically fired automatic two rounds which was concerning, but I think I just double punched the trigger. Light enough for me.

SharpSpur - I actually read someone else on another forum with the older thug model that had that same issue and sent the gun back in.

Hunting15 - I have read where many folks have upgraded the trigger with an MCarbo $12 trigger return spring. Looked like a pretty easy install if you've ever messed with AR's, etc. I'm not that concerned about the trigger on a shotgun - I don't think - but if I'm not a fan I plan on doing the spring upgrade.
