Went to a new lease today. Heard 1 but was off property. Then another one sounded off on me. The way this land lays, no way to walk to him so I got back to truck and drove around to opposite side of tract. I parked and started easing to a pasture where I thought he was. This field has a crown so I was just literally taking one step at a time along the wood line and glassing. Last step and I peered over and saw FOUR fans!! Oh s**t!! They were 100 yards away so I ducked down and backed up and got in the woods.

This wasn’t the ideal setup because the pasture is on a ridge and the wood line drops off pretty quick. I’d be looking up at any bird that comes…if I can get this done. Positive is that when I see him, he’s well within killing range, like in my face range! I just don’t like this kind of setup but you gotta do what I gotta do!

I knew the only way to get them I was to call the hen to me so I started cutting and yelping and boy did she take the bait! She started yelping back and then the gobs sounded off!! Omg…it was intense!

We went back and forth and then I saw a head and it was her and then a jake popped up at 25 yards He had about a 5 inch beard so he got a pass.

They both went back over then knoll and I waited a few minutes and then lightly yelped and scratched in the leaves. GOBBBBLLLLEE!!!! Holy hell!! They had slipped in right on me but the elevation prevented me from seeing them and they were at my 9 o’clock and sooooo close!! My heart was about to pound out of my chest!! Then the hen came up to about 10 steps and yelping. A few seconds later I see a fan…..then another one. Both are at 20 yards but the one freaking clump of twigs is between us. I decided that the 1st one that gave me a clear shot was gonna get it! I had twisted into a cirque du Solis position and finally saw a white head. I try to never shoot them when they are strutting but I had no choice and let the LBXR’s do their thing!!

At the shot, turkeys flushed like quail!! I don’t know how many birds were there, probably 8-10 but it didn’t matter. My bird was stone dead and didn’t even flop. Man, I was excited!!! I still get the adrenaline dump and the dry heaves and overall a physical breakdown after every bird and this was no exception!!

He’s a good bird with 1 inch spurs, weighed 20lbs 1oz and is my 1st career double beard!!
