Hard to tell but fan doesn’t look full.

Re: No beard - 04/18/21 08:03 PM

That’s a full grown gobbler.

Boff my son killed a bird in TX with 1” spurs and a full fan and he had a 3/8” very thin beard. We couldn’t even find it at first. Some gobblers just don’t have them, although it’s rare.

Look at his wing patch, definitely a gobbler.

Re: No beard - 04/18/21 08:08 PM

Added other pictures.

I've killed adult birds with no spurs, not even a bump at the Cahaba WMA.
Seen beard rot, but I'm not seeing anything here.
Maybe he got in a fight and had it pulled off?

Maybe old and his hair is falling out like mine.

Maybe I can examine him for answers. laugh

I got on a bird in a hay field earlier in the year could have sworn he had a full fan and was grown. Just couldn’t ever find a beard. Never got close enough to inspect

Re: No beard - 04/18/21 08:28 PM

Yea he full grown - sometimes they can get beard Rot and just hav 2-7 inch beard and I am guessing they can also hav no beard
I called a few spurless birds - my buddy killed a monster w like 1 1/2 inch spurs that had like 3 inch beard - beard rot -

one of the toughest birds I ever hunted had either no beard or a Jake beard (I did not see a beard) called him in different times - shot his subordinates each time - one had 1 1/4 inch spur and the other bird had 1 5/16 - never killed that beardless or Jake beard bird

I always shoot a bird w full fan

Walk like a gobbler, talk like a gobbler...die like a gobbler. Plenty of time to look for spurs ‘n beards once you kill ‘em.

I killed one last year with a 9” beard, bumps for spurs, one side of his fan was full and the other was short like a Jake. He fried up just fine though. Cool pics thanks for sharing.

Wing patch says full grown. Shoot him and make some nuggets.

Cool barring on the fan too. I’ve always wanted to kill a bird with that type of barring.

Re: No beard - 04/19/21 12:15 AM

What about the white coloring in the middle tail feather. The biggest birds I’ve ever killed had that coloring. Never noticed it in the younger looking ones

I thought the same thing. I killed one yesterday that had a single barred feather in the middle of his fan.

Re: No beard - 04/19/21 12:42 AM

I killed 2 with no spurs

The 1/2 full fan and 1/2 Jake fan is wild someone posted

That stud I hunted in Sweetwater for 3-4 years had no beard - why I never shot him - after I killed the 2 subordinates - I realized he was the one acting stupid - could not see beard but he could hv had 2 inches hid n his feathers - wish I would hav shot him

Nice career turkey hunting Fred

Re: No beard - 04/19/21 01:41 AM

I got a picture/video of one in Pickens county the exact same way. No sign of a beard, but has a full fan. We nicked named him no rope. After we killed his buddy we haven’t seen him since. Can’t see his spurs in the picture either. If someone would post them I wouldn’t mind sharing the picture.

Re: No beard - 04/19/21 02:12 AM

Most of the turkeys we have up here have that barring in the fan. I’ve killed birds with no spurs, and even 1 spur. I’ve also killed mature birds with short beards. I’ve never seen one like that though, no trace of a beard that I can see.

I did the same thing one season in Fl, except my beard less one was from beard rot. I joked that it took me 2 turkeys to get a whole one.
