Nothing like driving towards the lightning with a full moon out. Kinda eery looking but storms have worked off away. Maybe they play ball today up in the NW corner

Against my better judgement I decided to brave the public land crowd this morning. There was a truck parked at my first choice at 4:45 so I’m at plan B. It looks breezy, hopefully I’ll hear one to fool with.

Cloudy, hot, foggy with a little mist falling. Not looking good but better than being at work. This weather sucks.

scouting out a new spot that looked good on topo. Settled in and had a crazy top gun hen that was roosting 150 yards away buzz my head at 5 feet. Guess she likes my call. Males must have lockjaw because it is quiet.

Re: LFTW 3/27/2021 - 03/27/21 12:51 PM

Battled the same hot/muggy conditions in Bertha but got on one early and was able to make it happen. My only setup was in a trashy SMZ between two newly replanted clearcuts. He drummed and gobbled just out of sight for 20 minutes before drifting off down the SMZ. I moved about 40 yards to where he was strutting and struck him and in about 5 minutes he strutted over the little hill and I killed him where he was originally strutting and drumming. Nasty conditions but blessed nonetheless! Good luck fellers stay after ‘em!!

Re: LFTW 3/27/2021 - 03/27/21 01:42 PM

Text book hunt this morning. Went back into where we had the encounter yesterday, and multiple birds were roosted together and started gobbling early and often. They were roosted in a bottom off the edge of a food plot so we set up on the road leading to the plot about 50 yards from the field edge. My dad was set up front and I was a little ways back doing the calling. We were set up close enough that I could hear them fly down. Told dad they’re down and to get ready. The gobbled 3 or 4 times on the ground getting closer with every gobble. Just like the script says they walked through the plot right down the road. 3 gobblers all together started making they’re way right into the danger zone. We let them come and they put on a show. Gobbled in our face at 28 steps, so loud that dad flinched so violently that I thought the hunt was over. He did perfect and waited for the strutter to clear the others, and let it fly. We were done at 6:45. Dropped him back at the cabin and now I’m off on the search for one for me.

Congrats Coosa - Jlbuc and General

I finally had a hunt where turkey gobbled pretty good - he was 250 yards across line and had several hens between me and him - prob gobbled 20 to 25 times - my best hunt of year for gobbling - last gobble he was headed in other direction - I did not think I was in the game much but the best thing I had going

Re: LFTW 3/27/2021 - 03/27/21 08:45 PM

Best gobbling for me so far. Took my son and we were set up on 3-4. Of course, they had a flock of hens with them. Ended up getting one into 30 yards for my boy. He could see him, but he didn’t want to shoot through the thick stuff he was behind. We let him walk and got back in front of him. By that time, I think the hens took him too far off to make another move. Struck up another one about 1/2 mile from those birds around 10. Got him to gobble 5-6 times, but he got led off as well. Any day chasing these things with my boy is a good day!!

Had one this morning and he gobbled great on limb, and then nothing. This afternoon I called in a hen and what was weird she had a whistle at the beginning of her call. It was short but very distinct.
