Mine gobbled at a crow. Cut the distance. Gobbled at calling. Then a real hen did her thing. He pitched out and silence.
I’m sitting tight for now.
May go check other corner of property and come back.
Got to be at a ballpark by 11.

Re: LFTW 04/06/18 - 04/06/19 01:24 PM

Set up too close again, but it worked out. I was watching another one gobble and spit in a tree about 60/70 yards out. Didn't even know this one there until he pitched down about 20 yards from me.
Second multiple bearded bird in 2 years.

That stinks. Hate when stupid things and people ruin a hunt.
Ain’t nobody got time for that

Re: LFTW 04/06/19 - 04/06/19 10:42 PM

Took my son to our place in Missouri on youth hunt weekend. Craziest thing ever, called in 3 longbeards from one direction, another from a different way, and 4 Jake's all converging on us at the same time. All gobbling like crazy. All birds 25 yards surrounding us (no blind) and my boy lost his cool. Started moving all around causing the longbeards to walk off. The Jakes all stayed and gobbled for another 5-8 minutes but I couldn't get him to squeeze the trigger. He just hung his head and said he was too nervous to shoot.

8 birds gobbling from 360 degrees all at 25 yards, don't think I'll do that again. Just hope my son realizes that is a unique situation. Hope he recovers from his shakes and can find some success. He was pretty hard on himself after he had time to calm down.

He said, "dad please don't tell anybody why I couldn't shoot."

Hope I call in a single tomorrow.

He’ll be fine. Hell I had a grown man do that with me this am. Had 2 on a death march and guy flipped out moving. All I could do was sit there and think oh well.

Re: LFTW 04/06/19 - 04/06/19 11:17 PM

Man, this Portland Landing place is a truly amazing place! Awesome actually and I feel blessed to have this opportunity to hunt this weekend. Unfortunately, the turkeys are not cooperating. It was silent this morning in my section and on the SOA land within hearing distance. The only bird I heard this morning was across a slough on Corp of Engineer Land. He answered me once but between the boats flying up and down the slough and folks fishing, I could not coax him to fly across to my side of the river. I've got about 1000 acres to myself and the only bird I heard was off the land. slap But that's turkey hunting. I called up a hen at 730 but she was by herself. I hunted til 130 and called it.

I spent 13 hours hunting yesterday (I even stayed late to try to roost one), hunted 7 hours today, covered over 12 miles walking, and have heard 2 gobbles in 2 days in my section. According to the ranger who lives on the in the section I'm assigned, there have been at least 5 different birds hammering all week in the area I'm in. He gave me some good intel about where they've been strutting but so far, I've yet to see a gobbler while hunting. It's hard to kill one when they don't gobble and you don't lay eyes on them. I've got til noon tomorrow to get it done so we'll see what happens. They're in here but it's tough to kill them when they don't ever gobble and you don't lay eyes on them. Evidently they had one of those outdoor mentor hunts in my area last weekend and they worked on these birds pretty good. None were killed but they definitely got a little exposure to some calling.

This place is eat up with hogs. I had about a half dozen come by me this morning while I was calling the bird across the river, saw a group of about 15 with sows and piglets about the size of rabbits, and at my last set up close to a swamp, I videoed a boar wading in the water eating acorns. I've probably seen 30 or so during my time over there. I also videoed a baby alligator at the edge of some standing water. This place has got the critters.

Congrats to the killers today!

Got on one at daylight stayed with him till he disappeared about 10. Lots of hot walking till one trying to strike another. Then got some worms and took my lil man fishing, helped him unhook 20+ bluegill and shell crackers. Mighty fine day.

Glad they finally left our place. I had a bird gobbling Thursday morning and those jokers came directly to him and shut him up. Thought long and hard about throwing some TSS their way when they passed over me.

Went to a place I've not turkey hunted before, but have deer hunted twice. Those hunts I was put in a stand before light and never really saw the place. Heard one gobble once on the limb, another gobbled five or six times on the the limb, then neither one said another word. Don't have a clue where the went. About 8:15 one got fired up on his own. By the time I got in his zip code he had gone off the property. I set up and called, he eventually came back but locked up at about 60 yards, still on OML, and he eventually left. Hope to get another chance on him. It was good to get a chance to work one.
