Advice on tightening 20 gauge pattern - 02/14/18 01:06 AM

Loaded some 20 gauge tss #9s for the wife's shotgun. Shooting a jellyhead 770 choke. Not the best shooting conditions. Got 180 pellets in a 10" circle, 203 in the 20" circle. Any advice appreciated.

I was getting 315-320 with my .575. That was too tight. I am getting 220 in 10" and 570-580 in the 20" at 40 yds with a carlsons .600 now. Modified choke, sporting clays.

I shoot the Remington super full $20 choke. It’s tight and cheap! I shoot 8sand 9s blended.

Indian creek .555 out of a 21" 870. 290 to 300 in 10 all day. PT 2090 wad or the big20xl. Your numbers are so low something else is going on. May need to try a different load.

If that's supposed to be a .570 diameter choke , throwing 1 5/8 oz of 9s , that's not very good . That diameter should be flirting with 300 in the 10 at 40 yards. But I guess you have that figured out.

I'd polish the barrel, it makes a difference .

Just my opinion, but this is a pic of 300 pellets in a 10" at 40. (carlsons .575)

This is a pic of an even looser choke (undertaker .582) at 20 yds. Why would you risk the miss at 20 or closer when the pattern at 40 is adequate to kill 2 turkeys?

Even dialing mine down to 210-215 in the 10" at 40, I still get 530 in the 10" and 580 in the 20" at 20 yds !

In the old days of a fixed full in an old 870 shooting copper plated #6's, I was ecstatic if I even got close to 100 in the 10" at 40 yds!!
