newbie looking for HELP - 08/26/10 09:12 PM

hi all, I am new to the state of bama. just stationed here. I am also new into bow hunting, this will hopefully be my first season of many. Just never had the chance to get into when i joined the military. I recieved a used bow from my older brother who is an avid bow hunter in NY. It is totally stripped and I am looking for info on archery stores that will help me set it up and take the time to talk through everything with me. basically a one on one service so that I am comfortable with it when I walk out the door and I dont feel pushed to buy all top of the line accessories. I know very very little about bows. I am also looking into info about places to hunt around Huntsville and Toney. I would prefer not to pay someone for their land but I have not ruled it out totally. Thanks for all the help in advance.

There are several archery shops within 5 miles of Huntsville....I don't have a preference for any of them, but I'm pretty sure they all have fairly knowledgeable staff. Double CC outfitters on Winchester Road, Full Draw Archery on North Memorial Parkway across from Larry's Pawn, Custom Archery on South Memorial Parkway down south of the Weatherly Road intersection and Backwater Outdoors on Highway 72 in Gurley.
Now for my advice, figure out what you want, go the classifieds at archerytalk.com and save about 70%, find an avid archer to put it together for you for free.
My second piece of advice you didn't ask for, but I'm gonna give it...if you think you will bow hunt for a long time, I would purchase the best accessories you can afford and when you decide to upgrade bows, just take your accessories with you to the new bow. Selling a bow fully loaded DOES NOT get you the money you have into the bow, but you can sell the bare bow for a respectable return.

Welcome! Don't know much about any archery shops. We've got some, I just don't use them. As for hunting, you should be able to hunt Redstone and then we have Black Warrior/Bankhead National Forest below Moulton, AL and Skyline in Jackson co. Wheeler Refuge also. Checkout this site out:
http://www.outdooralabama.com/

for maps on Bankhead and Skyline. For Redstone, stop by outdoor rec and let them fellers explain how. Also checkout craigslist for hunting leases and here. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses and info. My plan was too buy the best accessories as possible, i guess i should have explained better. I just dont want someone who is going to pressure me into buying a sight for $150 when the $70 one is just as good and more durable, for an example. I will check those shops out that you replied with. So is all of alabama basically a lease for land besides the state parks?

Lots of lease land, you can drive backroads and ask around and you might get lucky, can hunt at Bankhead and Skyline and they have as big of deer as anywhere in this state, Wheeler and Swan Creek I have never hunted, but there must be deer there or no one else would try, Redstone Arsenal if you work there.
One more place to try this weekend is Gander Mountain on North Parkway, a couple of weeks ago they had select archery stuff for 50% off...they had some $100 trophy ridge sights and arrow rests for $50....might not be available anymore, but worth a try.
