Logan Martin??? - 08/17/20 05:07 PM

Fishing Logan Martin first time. Any suggestions?? Techniques and type of water to fish this time of year. Don’t want locations, just types of places to fish. Main river, flats, ledges, docks??? Just things I should look for.

Chad

fun lake lots of fish to be caught just a pile of small ones in the lake now days. I would go way up the river if they are going to run much water. Othwrwise spend your time flipping docks if she is comfortable with that

Appreciate it, Ben2, we are going to go tomorrow and work on it. That was one of my plans to do. If she catches fish she’s happy. So that’s our goal. Appreciate the info!

I used to fish logan about 20 years ago. I used to love throwing a suspending rattling rogue for spots. I used to catch some big spots, 4 and 5lbs. I would put in at town and country and run up the river to a marina, cant remember the name. Had a bunch of sailboats docked at the marina in 15 to 30ft of water. I would cast that jerk bait parallel to sailboat so you could work the entire length of the boat. Jerk bait was probably only diving 4 to 6ft but those big spots would nail it. And I didnt just twitch it, I would jerk the crap out of it. So you may want to give it a try. Clown rogue. red head with gold and white body

Wish I had seen this earlier. I could've helped ya. Fished this lake all my life and deep water points are your friend. Pulling water or not. There are several points on the channel not far from Lakeside that are deadly.

We didn’t go Tuesday, but they are fishing Saturday the Airport High School Tournament. I’m not captaining this one so I wasn’t able to go and test my strategies. I’m just going to let him captain them and just hope for the best. Hopefully they find a needle in the hay stack. Airport went into the trail schedule really early this year. And I wasn’t able to get vacations in before first tournament. Last yr first tournament was in October. This year August 22. Caught us off guard.

I'm no expert on Logan or anywhere else for that matter but a simple Carolina rig with a finesse worm on deep channel points will produce fish about anywhere you go.

What Ben says is the gospel truth. Nobody really knows, everybody has a theory. Mine goes like this: 15 years ago there was honestly about 1/3 the bass boat traffic (also way less pleasure boats), I'm not exaggerating that at all. So those fish weren't getting caught as often (caught repeatedly, drug around in a livewell all day, released with delayed mortality from the abuse). Logan is different from all the other Coosa lakes in that it has the least cover BY FAR, there's just nowhere for those fish to hide. Also it's 20 minutes from Birmingham/Oxford/Anniston/Gadsden/Pell City--it gets tee totally thrashed from all the big population centers 24/7/365. If you go down there right now--9:45AM on Thursday--it'll look like most lakes look on Saturday. There's a tournament out of every marina 7 nights a week, half the weekday mornings, and every Sat/Sun all year long. Bottom line is it gets the most fishing pressure and has the least amount of cover for the fish to hide from being caught. Neely Henry is just slightly better, but folks like me who live there and fish both lakes often can see the same trajectory.

plus all the f1 tiger bass Marks put in the lake have likely died by now.

Re: Logan Martin??? - 08/20/20 07:09 PM

I remember when it was essentially guaranteed I could go to any of about a dozen clay/gravel high spots and drag a C-rig around and catch 3 pound spots until you just got tired. I don't even remember the last 5# spot I've seen from Logan (frankly from any of the Coosa lakes) Granted, I don't have any exposure to Mitchell and Jordan, so they might still crank em out. But Weiss, Neely, especially Logan, just don't seem to have the magnum spots anymore.

Re: Logan Martin??? - 08/20/20 07:46 PM

It is overfished and overboated. Used to be a trip to the lake was relaxing now it is a pain in the ass with all the boats racing around driven by morons.

Re: Logan Martin??? - 08/20/20 09:50 PM

Lake Jordan ain't much better. I fish it quite a bit. Has really gone down last couple of years. The main problem on Jordan in my opinion is to many bass tournaments.
They have them it seems like every day and night. A lot of boat traffic and jet skis.

Re: Logan Martin??? - 08/20/20 10:28 PM

You are not far off for most of the time. I was out there from 8:30 to 10:30 this morning and only saw 3 bass boats and 1 pontoon boat. So not much traffic where we were at.

Too many tournaments. Too many floods during the spawn in the last few years. I live on LM, and have never seen it this bad. The crappie are off also. There are far too many tournaments on this lake. The bass have seen everything. There are good spots to fish, but not mid-lake. It is like the Gulf of Mexico on weekends. I'll be glad when Labor Day comes and goes.

I only fished a couple days in June but I was amazed at the number of crappie in that lake. Every brush pile was loaded woth them!

Re: Logan Martin??? - 08/30/20 09:22 PM

Went to Logan today, first time there in a few weeks. Actually wasn't too bad, caught several fish, had three pretty good largemouths. I didn't get there till 9:00 this morning, only fished till 3:00 because storms ran me off. Fish were really shallow, REALLY shallow. Caught fish in grass, off docks, seawalls, and just in the middle of pockets around any visible cover. It was still Logan Martin though, Good Heavens at the 800-gajillion boats, geez it's frustrating.

Had a pretty neat catch.... the biggest fish I caught (probably 3-1/4 pounds) chased my lure to the boat as I was reeling in and boiled it just about the time I was lifting it out of the water, I think I might've cussed and squealed pretty loud laugh

Re: Logan Martin??? - 09/08/20 03:13 PM

Y'all been on Logan lately? I fished there Saturday morning till about 11:00, I would classify that trip as "struggled". Caught one spot about 2.75 pounds, and a handful of other dinks just junk fishing. Saw NO fish offshore (well, I did see some scattered suspended fish, but nothing catchable or frankly nothing I even assume were definitely bass), didn't have a single bite on docks, just no pattern. I really couldn't tell you from Saturday where I even think the fish are for sure. Got a small tournament out of Pell City on Saturday,

I reckon I caught 10 fish total, and honestly half of them probably weren't even 12".

I went out a few weeks ago on my kayak and struggled. I have some friends that fish a lot of tournaments and they say things have been really tough on Logan Martin the past 2 months.

Should be several schools of fish in the lakeside creek whatever they call it. Should not have to leave there

We have a small tourney out of D&S on Saturday as well. Gonna try and prefish this Friday and see what's going on. I hate that lake and REALLY hate it at this time of year. Probably just pick an area, pick up a jig, and flip/pitch all day.

Re: Logan Martin??? - 09/11/20 09:05 PM

I fished from 2:00 till 6:30 yesterday and caught 4 total fish, and I don't know if 2 of them would've even measured. Bunch of small spots schooling later in the evening, but otherwise it was just a ghost town. I did see an occasional bigger blowup, but they were so random and scattered you couldn't cast to them.

Or let me say it this way: I fished almost all of Rabbit Branch, so I'm certainly not on any fish in there.

Re: Logan Martin??? - 09/13/20 01:57 PM

I fished from daylight until 1:30. There were two tournaments out of Pell City Park. I only caught 1 fish that would not measure but nothing over 2.3lbs. Managed to catch 12 bass but its just down right hard for me to get bit in the summer time on any lake. I don't tournaments fish anymore but my best 5 was 9-10 pounds. I still like to compare to what won the tournaments. With that said, does anyone know what it took to win yesterday and or get in the money?

Re: Logan Martin??? - 09/14/20 01:35 PM

Fished from 10AM to 3PM on Saturday. My partner decided to stay deep chasing spots on humps. He caught one keeper and I didn't get a bite. I've zero'd in a tourney before, but I've NEVER fished and not caught something or at least gotten a bite until this weekend.

14lbs won our club tourney (guy lives on the lake and is easily the best fisherman I've ever been around). 2nd place was 6lbs if that tells you anything.

Re: Logan Martin??? - 09/14/20 05:48 PM

I fished a little small solo trail tournament out of Town & Country, only had 4 fish for 7.22 pounds, finished 3rd. It only paid 2 places though, only had 8 boats show up. For what it's worth, 1st and 2nd place had 5 fish (10.4 and 9.1 respectively), I had 4 fish, 4th place had two fish for 3.33, and the rest zeroed. All the guys I communicated with who did pretty good Saturday were above Stemley Bridge, I stayed way down all day.

Saw where 18.18 (with a 6.45 big fish) won the God is Bigger tournament, but heck they also had several 11-14 pound bags.

That is a GREAT sack this time of year. My congrats to anyone that can catch 15+ right now. I dang sure can't!

Same. Kinda going back to our conversation earlier about "where have the big spots gone?", you'd be dang lucky to catch one good largemouth on Logan (much less two, much less 18 pounds of them) and when the magnum spots just went AWOL, so did my odds of bringing in that kind of bag. I've won on Logan several times with 15+ of spots, even had 20-10 with a 6.00 big fish (spot) before, but I doubt I've had 10 pounds of spots in several years. My "good" bags nowadays at Logan is a 3-1/2 pound largemouth, with a mix of 4 more spots and heads in the 1-1/2 to 2 pound range, and that gets you solidly in the 10 to 11 pound range.

I never feel like I can catch a 15#+ bag at Logan, but I believe I can catch 20# at Neely "most" of the year (except hot Summer).

The most amazing feat in all of fishing to me is seeing a big stringer at Logan, especially largemouth. Someone does it all the time, but I just don't know what I don't know, I reckon.

Re: Logan Martin??? - 09/27/20 01:39 PM

Well we didn't do terrible.... finished 7th (out of 25) with 10.29 pounds. 1st and 2nd were in the 13's, I think there was an 11.something pound bag, then 4th through us were all 10.something. I thought it was tough as usual for Logan, there was a ton of boats out (especially if you went Choccolocco or below), and it just got sunny and slick with no wind about mid-morning. We just couldn't find any largemouths EXCEPT for the first fish I caught on our first cast (about 2-3/4 pounds).

Had something cool happen though....my livewells are divided, and I had a GIANT red crawfish in both sides, I mean both of them were like 5" long and reddish black. Then there were tons and tons of tiny orange pieces everywhere.
