Gates at the Dam today and other big water

Gates at the Dam today and other big water - 02/07/20 01:15 AM

I dropped by the dam for a minute today. 16 gates open high enough to see daylight between the bottom of the gate and the water coming thru. None of the open gates are restricting flow at all. The middle gate is completely removed and water just rolling thru bigly. The docking wall at the ramp on the lock side is completely submerged. And the water is rising.

The Paint Rock river is rolling big time. All the neighborhood ponds in Clem's area are about to run over all their banks. And the water is still rising.

I've put a boat in below the dam with most, maybe all of the floodgates open, but I don't think I'll chance it for a week or two.

I practically grew up down there since we lived on the end of Georgia Mountain that the south end dam is built into and I can tell you that the rollers that I saw today were probably the biggest that I've ever seen down there. There's a stage or 2 with water level and flow that it gets crazy. Today was one of them.

I was down there one day several years ago just looking because I wasn't about to put my boat in there. All of the gates were open and there was a West wind blowing 20+ mph. The wind coupled with the water flow at probably 20 MPH in the direct opposite direction had waves that looked like they were about 5' from crest to trough with a very short length to them. There was huge splashes up on the banks all the way up to the picnic tables. There was some IDOT there in a center console with water splashing over the rails with every wave. He must have had a couple of hellacious bilge pumps going.

Yesterday afternoon the Flint had completely flooded everything around the Hampton Cove ballfields and RTJ Golf River Course, to the point of Old 431 being closed.

It came up in one day, one of the fastest rises I've seen in 15 years here. Probably is worse today.

I honestly don't know how the golf course is able to stay in decent shape by getting flooded 4-5 times a year. And I don't know how the old bridges on Old 431 still are standing.

Would be great if so. That road is barely wide enough for two vehicles, the bridges aren't, and it's crazy how the engineering has held up for so many decades with all the water that flows through there. Really a true 'they don't make 'em like they used to" kind of thing.

It comes up quickly around here after a hard rain, but I don't remember the last time it flooded the fields so quickly in one day. The Flint got hit hard on the upper end and rolled through.

Those bridges were engineered by folks with sense. They'll be here 3 days after the apocalypse!

I haven’t been to the G, but it’s all the way up to the top of the wing wall between the flood gates and the turbines at Chickamauga Dam.

It was dead even with it right at dark so it will be in the parking lot before daylight. Probably is now.
